  • A food profit margin fact

Hillshire Farms "Salad Kit" (It's a 5oz pack of individually packed salad stuff less lettuce and dressing. And that begs the point. ) Well, it retails for $2.79. I was on my "Cheap Meat" run and they had those for 99 cents. They were so fucked, not even I would buy it. Here's the kicker. I overheard them talking about that shit. Even at 99 cents, they have a 30% profit margin.

So what's the problem? The company is obviously selling products to make a profit. There is nothing wrong with that. Those who believe it's worth it buy it, and those who don't, don't. If enough people think it's worth it, the product is successful. If not, they stop making it.

30% is pretty much a normal margin A restaurant for example has to get a 30% margin on their cooked and served meals as opposed to the cost of all the individual ingredients, to be profitable.

In High School we went to visit an industrial bakery ("Quintens", for those interested), they supply "fresh" bread and sandwiches to pretty much every supermarket in Belgium. I overheard one of my teachers talking to the tourguide. When they had a sale in the supermarket, on sandwiches for example, like '15% cheaper sandwiches today'. They would simply add 15% less flour or whatever to the sandwiches and up the yeast but a marginal amount.

Result? Sandwiches that look just the same but are a shitload cheaper to make, making you think you had a bargain but you were actually paying MORE than usual for LESS than usual.

Yeah, but still having a 30% markup on rotted salad that fett wouldn't even eat is awful. That means at the normal price 2.79, they are marking it up four times the original price. Now, if it was good stuff at 30% mark up, sounds good.

That was my point. The markup on those packaged things is huge.

One Albertson's and 2 QFC's and 1 Grocery Outlet and the local veggie stand when in season. I hit the stores early, 7:30-9:00AM, when there a very few customers. I don't like other shoppers. They get in my way.

No meat today. But a great beer score. 2X18 MGD; 3x12 Coors and 4X6 Mich Lager for $48. That's 50 cents a beer. "96 bottles of beer on the wall. 96 bottles of beer"
