The appearance is definitely a plus. Brazillian often has more, better "streaky" figuring to it. I can sometimes tell the difference, but not always. There's high quality rosewood that ain't Brazillian, and there's some pretty crappy rosewood out there, too.

The Brazlian Rosewood on my PRS just seems to have that sound. What is it? Not quite sure I can put it into words. It's a bit smokier. It mellows the sound a bit. Maybe you can say makes it darker. I'm not sure and describing sound is not one of my strong suits. Most of my guitars have rosewood, that PRS is the only brazilian one I have. It's just a bit warmer than the standard Rosewood...

As for being able to tell it from regular stock, I never really tried. But looking at mine Brazilian is a bit denser and darker with more even streaking...

And for me, it begins and ends with rosewood when talking back and sides on an acoustic...

I have changed necks with different fretboards on a few strats and I like maple for looks out of the three but I love all of them tonally for diffrent reasons. It really depends on what type of music I am playing i guess. Ebony is kind of the in between tonally to my ears between the 3.

I like the feel and look of ebony as well. It is a good "in between" fretboard wood...

If it looks more high quality, I presume that it's a Brazilian one. But of course, I'm just a poor boy, nobody loves me

I recently replaced my DK2M maple fretboard with a DK2 rosewood fretboard. I think after two days I had to take the rosewood fretboard off. The tone wasn't as clear as the maple and my fingers seemed to drag on the fretboard for some reason. Also, popping out harmonics didn't come as easy on the rosewood.

Just what I noticed, may be all internal in my head, but the maple just feels and sounds better to me.

Exactly what do you look for in a piece of rosewood to determine it's quality?

Smokier? That's a new one. So would maple be poached?

I've heard people make these same statements but I'll be damned if I could ever hear the difference between two otherwise identical instruments (well, as identical as any two guitars can be).

There is a lot of Indian rosewood out there that looks beautiful - better than a lot of the Brazilian boards I've seen lately. My Suhr had an amazing looking Indian rosewood board - it even smelled good

                        Sure maple can be poached...

It could be that I'm taking the sonics of the whole guitar and putting more importance on the fretboard then what should be there. Maybe I'm caught up in the Braziliain hype. Who knows? I thought I did. But now, maybe not...

Indian rosewood, when stained correctly, looks quite nice...

                          Maple or Rosewood,etc boards

                          > Has anyone ever seen a Jackson with a cocobolo board? Cocobolo is nearly identical to ebony as far as durability, machining characteristics, and hardness. It looks like rosewood in a lot of cases, since it's part of the Dalbergia family, but with MUCH more figure. Tommy D.

I was thinking about this on the walk back to work. It must have something to do with the tighter grain. All brazilian rosewood I have seen is much tighter than it's counterparts. By tighter I mean less divots or whatever it is you call the valleys in normal rosewood fretboards. My PRS is smooth on the top like ebony, no divots or valleys, just glass smooth. So with that tightness comes a more pronounced sound, not bright like maple. But smokey, like smoke...

I'm also a fan of rosewood and ebony.
thats tne main thing about a maple board, the finish, raw is great, like a wolfgang, but can pretty dirty if you're not careful,
I have a tele that had a high gloss finish maple board it was beautiful, but I hated the sticky feel. so I refinned it in satin and its much better. I don't mind rosewood, its low maintanence, and plays nice, ebony is still best IMO
