  • music that sounds like the apocalypse

allrighty, so i've got an ictchin for some music that sounds like the world is literally going to end by the time the song finishes. What do you guys suggest?

This can be ANYTHING! classical, metal, techno...whatever you feel has that apocalyptic/terrifying feeling. I dont want stuff thats scary because its a bunch of noise and yelling, but because the chord progressions and melody lines have the power to insight terror into the ears of the listener.

    Stuff like:
    Verdi: Requiem Mass
    Mozart: Requiem Mass
Dimmu Borgir - Progenies of the great apocalypse

The End Of All Things? These came to mind...

Voivod - To The Death - noisy, thrashy, chaotic but exactly my idea of the sound track to the end.

    Anything by Behemoth

Celtic Frost - anything from Monotheist, but especially Synagoga Satanae or A Dying God Coming Ito Human Flesh

    All the newer Dimmu Borgir.

Cradle Of Filth's Damnation And A Day has some majorly epic parts too.

I know/understand what you are looking for. So I'm going to give you a couple of songs/parts off the top of my head that instantly remind me of destruction/the apocalypse with a larger than life ominous feel to them, accomplished by the actual music (progressions and melodies) itself and not just by having some Death Metal band grind it out. That's what you're after, right?

      ----OPETH

      -Demon Of The Fall

-But especially: the last 30 seconds or so of "Godheads Lament", that is THE chord progression of the apocalypse and the demons howling at the gates. The most intense seconds of "metal" ever recorded. Seriously if the apocalypse was ever to have a soundtrack those last few bars of Godheads Lament would be it!

      ----Gojira

-You might want to check out the first 40 seconds of "Heaviest Matter Of The Universe"(<---I can totally envision the world collapsing and cities crumbling in slow motion to the intro of this song), also chekc out: "To Sirius" or "Ocean Planet"

      ----Miguel Galvez-Taroncher

-La Luna y La Muerta (VERY apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic sounding in a lot of places)

      ----Basement Jaxx

      - Intro (from Crazy Itch Radio) (uses a sample of Verdi's requiem but expands on it with an extra choir and other samples) VERY awesome sounding. You'll really want to check this out. It has a more contemporary feel, which might be what you're looking for if you're trying to portray a modern-day apocalypse. Put this on LOUD and everyone will be scared to hell.

      ----J.S. BACH

-Toccata in D Minor, the intro to that (the universally known three notes and then the full open gallow "terror" chords) If you play the first 30secs of this yourself on synth and change that final modulation to a major and make it into something minor, you'll have pure apocalypse on your hands. My grandmother used to play this piece as well to check out big tube-organs in churches (she's a good player) and I was always scared as hell as a little kid, the entire church would start trembling when those chords struck.

      ----

-And of course most expressionist classical pieces, which will fuck you out of your mind if played at the right volume, with irregular tempi and insane fortissimos.

-Between The Buried And Me - 'Alaska'

The breakdown in this song is just plain brutal! Kinda makes you wanna gauge out somebody's eyes with your thumbs. The beginning sounds like a really easy listening song. After that, total chaos.

        -Cannibal Corpse

Anything from KILL is amazing. Favorite song: 'The Time To Kill is Now'. So freakin brutal! I love it!

And for techno/elektronika, you should definitly check into some of the Aphex Twin work, as well as their side-projects. I also find some detroit rave to be very apocalyptic sounding, but I don't have any of that stuff with me right now and I can't name 'em off the top of my head.

And for what it's worth, I know it's not what you're looking for, Patrick, but: Now You've Got Something To Die For by Lamb Of God and Destroy by Ektomorf. There's this breakdown in Destroy with lead pipes being hit on barrels and the chord progression over that is pretty fucking crushing too.

Orff - Carmina Burana :More than just O Fortuna. Real the libretto or whatever its called. The whole thing is magnificent. The Monk's ravings in the middle (Ego sum abbas) are my favorite.

Night on Bald Mountain, not so much end of the world..but parts of it depict a dark and threatning storm very well.

The harpsichord solo in Bachs Brandenburg concerto #5 (this varies as it is often left open to interpetation by the performer)

The end of Don Giovanni, the section where Don's father comes back to haunt him from the grave, its similar to the overture. Again, not so much end of the world, but its rather eerie.

Some of the live versions of Heroin by Lou Reed are pretty dark. For the ultimate look into the abyss I vote for Joy Division. Closer.

Daddy- by Korn, Ball Tongue-by Korn.
                        Both off the 1st album.
I lived across the street from them a long time ago before they broke into the arena level they reached. Munky was the coolest one to hang with, I scared the snot out of the rest of the band.

The last track off Immolation's "Close to a World Below". I think it's the title track. Very evil and creepy sounding.
