Any Mustang tuners out there???? I was reading a Mustang 5.0 and Super Fords article on the new Saleen Parnelli Jones Mustang and noticed that they throw away the stock Ford Charge Motion plates while reworking the engine. Saleen says that they find them "...restirctive..." and that they can produce the torque and performance they need with the new forged stroker Piston/Rods/Crank and Comp Camshaft (w/slight Bore). Does anyone know if removal of the Charge Motion plates on a S197 would allow the car to breath better...or do you think the airflow would be to screwed up? I've got a Flash Retune and Steeda Cold kit so far. I have yet to put on Steeda Underdrive Pulllies, BBK Headers, Cherry Bomb Exhaust and Ford Racing X-Pipe. I was also considering a BBK 62MM Twin Thottle Body. I know Steeda sells aftermarket Charge Motion plates that are supposed to add HP...but I found it interesting that Saleen tossed the Stock Charge Motion plates...and did not replace them at all.

I used to have a 5.0, but I don't know WTF a charge motion plate is?

It's sort of a variable restrictor plate (almost throttle body-ish) that is on the intake side. Helps improve low end driveability on this motor (torque) and probably mainly improves emissions.
On a stockish motor, it work's ok on its intended purpose helping increase torque at low rpms.
Once you start getting stuff done to the motor and gears etc, they tend to be more of just a overall restriction.
If you have low gears that GIVE you low end torque, or engine mods that improve air flow over stock (heads, headers, intake), removing them would probably be advantageous.
If you went to a stroker kit, they would definitely be a major restriction. On a stockish motor, I'd probably not get too worried about them till you start modding more.

Did you say "Cherry Bombs"? As in old school Glasspacks? Are you really comtemplating running glasspacks on a new GT? I think you would be better served by a good modern straight through design muffler. Or a decent chambered muffler.

I know they sell "delete plates to replace that part, but I am not going that nuts with mine.
Kind of off topic, but here is a few pics of my latest mods. Me and my brothers knocked the job out in about 3 1/2 hours.
Also put the Hurst in.

On the S197's removing the charge plates can give you some power but you have to have a retune done to see the full potential. I was talking with a tuner on Sunday and he said he's seen around a 25-30hp increase when removing the plates and doing a conservative dyno tune.
Also, when doing the tune they can overwrite the perameters that pull the throttle closed a little when you go full throttle. Most people don't know that Ford put in a parameter so that when you stand on it WOL the ECU pulls the throttle blade closed a little to keep you from really running the car hard. If all you did was change that one parameter and nothing else 1/4 times can pick up almost 3/10 of a second. My Toys:

That's messed up they do that with ECU on WOT. Gotta love the fly by wire setups...
I'll have to figure they probably pull back timing on shifts with the automatic cars as a well. Seems that has been going on a while.

Thanks, John and Joe. I appreciate it.
I have noticed throttle lag like crazy with this car. It was told to me that Ford has it set that way. I was also told that all it takes is a handheld tuner with the right tune to get rid of it. Not sure if I'll do that or not. I don't race the car, and it has plenty of 'get up and go' as is.Scott
