With that said, is it just me or do all lead players in metal bands today sound the same? Sweeps, tapping, super fast scales, but no character.
And no melody, either. Say what you want about the "hair band" era of shred but, IMHO, the songwriting - including the soloing - was a helluva lot more melodic and enjoyable back then.

I really can't seem to get into a lot of newer contemporary metal because so much of it is just downtuned to the key of A-fart "chugga, chugga" s**t. It's like emo kids with an inordinate fascination with death largely took over metal. Heck, I often enjoy mainstream rock and punk-ish stuff more than I do metal bands nowadays. But I suppose a lot of all that has to do with the retards running the record companies now, too.

also there is no groove and catchy hooks...and cool r'n'r attitude.

Shred in terms of innovative guitar playing is totally dead.

Don't care. Most shred nowadays is boring as hell, just some diminished scale blasted as fast as possible with a horrible mix and an overly compressed sound. I can't listen to it for more than 5 minutes or I die.
You took too much, man. Too much. Too much.
