I was at Dawsons music in Manchester yesterday drooling over a new black KV they have there, marked up at £1,799 ($3,450 I kid you not).
Now I've been quoted @$1700 for the same model in the US. So with say $250 for shipping (I've not looked at shipping costs yet so it's a wild guess), that takes me up to $1,950 or £990 bar a few pence.
So we have something called VAT (Value added tax) in the UK and that is charged on the cost of the guitar and the shipping so
£990 + 17.5% = £1163.25
On top of that there could be up to 8% import tax so that takes us up to £1256. Hmm let me think, I bet that is way under what the guitar would cost to a dealer from the UK importers?
So £1,799 - £1256 = a saving of £523 or $1,029.26. Now how do you like them apples.
So I think if I were to sell that on as new and unplayed I could undercut the dealer. However the little sales monkey at Dawsons made a good point that any warranty work needed on the guitar might not be honoured by Fender, so that could be a deal breaker.
So on higher end guitars there is money to be saved. I'm not so sure about being able to sell them on and make a decent enough return to justify the risk, but "fortune favours the brave" as they say. Plus if I'm off on the shipping then it could even be more attractive.
I'm currently saving up to do this, but I'm also looking at used. Now if I only didn't have bills to pay...
P.S. Someone check my maths as I'm shit at figuresFwopping, you know you want to!

Did I not highlight how the VAT and import Tax works in my post? It's fairly uniform across the EU. So you should be able to figure the values out from that.Fwopping, you know you want to!

1. Spend $250 for a Strat
2. Spend $350 for shipping (does this include exorbitant Turkish import/ customs fees?)
3. Sell guitar in Turkey for $600
4. ????????
5. Profit
