I saw them last summer, and they rocked then, too. Funny enough, I think the last time I saw them before that was the Shout at the Devil tour. And it got me thinking "why haven't I gone to see these guys more - they fuckin' rock." I've definitely gotten more and more into Crue the past few years.

You know he hits so hard that all the tom and snare skins last only one or two shows, same thing with most of the cymbals and cowbell. And the Ahead duralumin (material wich lots of flighter planes are made of) sticks he has (life time warranty if you buy 'em from music store).... he uses like five pairs per show... and all look like bananas after the show.
That's cool and all, but I wonder how he practices. He must have a few kits, which techs are constantly/daily/hourly changing the tom and snare skins on? I also wonder how his tendons and all will handle that beating.....Tommy's not in his 20s anymore. Don't want him to pound himself into injury.

don't worry man, with todays technology... changing the skins take very little time... and he has an awsome drum tech Steve Morrison who gets the perfect tuning very quickly.... wich is very important of course.... great tuning can make even the shittiest kit sound good.
And Tommy has absolutley the most advanced set-up.... although his monster-like 32' and 26' kick drums and all the shit seem to be scary but his over the top DW custom drums and Gibraltar hardware are really like lego. In the 80's it took 6 hours to put up everything, specially the big kits with racks.... but these days everything is way more advanced.
And sure he has many many kits.
That being said... no he doesn't injure himself. He and John Bonham are by far the heaviest hitting drummers ever. Funny... because Tommy is a skinny guy.
But the heavy hit comes very naturally, he doesn't put much effort into it. It's all in the wrist, even with the slightest hand movement the hit is so strong to make the satan cry. If he would hit with all his might, he would break everything instantly.
It allways amazes me when some amateur guys try to beat the drums as hard as possible... and they are using full arm motion... they play and sound like shit. The magic is in the wrist and in the fingers. All the dudes who have played in marching bands or jazz or latin or funk have that good wrist hit. Tommy played in marching band and learned all the sick jazz rudiments from Ian Paice solos.
Heavy hit is very important in rock music, because it really makes the sound better.... it's a fact. But only with a wrist hit and with a good rebound.... wich amateurs suck at... they use triggers or over-compress the drums... to hide how much they suck.
All the top notch producers want the rock drummers to hit the skins hard to get more punch... it really fattens the whole band mix.
I think Tommy was born with amazing wrists to have all the power, because his cymbals and skins last only a day or two.
They usually last about a year... with most of the drummers."There is nothing more fearful than imagination without taste" - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

btw. I forgot to mention one thing...
we all know that Girls, Girls, Girls is one of their pop-iest songs and whatnot.
but when they play it live, it's one of the heaviest songs I've ever heard.
on the album, it's produced to sound like pop rock, guitar is too back and whatnot
but live it fucking CRUSHES!!!
I like to play that riff on a guitar all the time, it's friggin massive, but with D tuning wich Mick uses, it absolutely destroys."There is nothing more fearful than imagination without taste" - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

It sounds like you had a blast and it was worth flying up again. I am sure thankful to the newer no frills companies like Sky Europe and Ryan Air.
I disagree about Mick.He is a medocre but suits Motley, just like Ace suited
KI$$. His slide is bad George Thoroughgood. He is an Alman wanna be, but he is fun in Motley.
