while i agree, i kind of disagree as well. sure, they're pretty docile and politically correct most of the time, but unlike american motor racing, when they're interviewed they usually talk about themselves and not rattle off all the teams sponsors. so its still nice to see that most of them are pretty self-centered lol, and thats why i like them.

A brief interview with a winner of '76 British GP, James Hunt, just after the race. You can't see the "press conferences" like this one in modern, money-pack...

I rest my case, how many of the 1D heroes would say what he did these days?

It looked like a really brutal impact, havent seen a stack that harsh since spa many years back and cart at elkhart lake quite a while ago. True testament to the technology and design of these cars. Which gets lost on fett

and I agree that the drivers nowdays tend to suck. Montoya and Raikonnen are the only guys I consider stellar drivers and racers. Epic car control, and when the teams actually uses them to their potential, devastating results. Lewis Hamilton is boring the shit out of me already. Sure its incredible to do this so early, but there is quite a bit of timing involved, raikonnen didn't get a car this much faster then the rest of the field, nor anywhere near as reliable. Doing great in that circumstance impresses me a hell of alot more.

Saying that any F1 drivers sucks is a little ridiculous IMO. even the shittiest F1 driver in the paddock is still leagues better than the average guy. I'm a huge fan of Raikkonen, and I totally agree that he's had horrible luck with breakdowns, and other misfortunate events that conspired to ruin his season. However, the Mclaren is not vastly superior to the Ferarris or even the BMWs for that matter. Don't forget, Kimi walked away with the win in Adelaide. The advantage swings back and forth as it always has. Pit strategy and tire choice can win or lose a race, and never mind the affect that a safety car can have on the outcome of a race. Starting this year, when a safety car is deployed, the lapped cars can cruise around and rejoin at the back of the pack in race order. The race leader will lose any lead he has built up. Imagine he's on a two stopper, and the guy behind him is on a one stopper. He's effectively just lost the race. Thanks safety car.

Back to the drivers though. Montoya was pretty good, but far too inconsistent. Button is good, but needs a better car. Alonso is also a great driver, but when he falls apart, he really falls apart. Look at how many times he went off at turn one on Sunday. Lewis Hamilton might seem boring, but so was Schumacher. Consistent, smooth, and fast, generally makes for boring, and that's what gets results. Button is the same way, and would be on the podium frequently if he had a decent car.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the wilder times too. I still remember watching the duel between Rene Arnoux and Gilles Villeneuve at Dijon in '79. I was 8 years old, and saw it live on TV. That shit was probably the best race I've ever seen. I believe it's the rules & regulations that have taken this kind of racing away from F1. It's not the drivers.

Ya know. Ive been reading this thread it sounds like a cool bunch of fans talking about a sport they like. Thats awesome. I dont follow F1 and have no idea who these guys are. I gathered from this thread that this Hamilton guy was rather new and won a race early in his career and that was big news in the sport. Great. So, I checked the news today and all I see is this.

Hamilton Cruises Into Formula One History
Rookie Becomes First Black Driver to Win F1 Race

Is this how the European media is spinning this too? I wouldnt think so as I doubt they have the same "guilt" complex that the American media has. It makes me sick how they take a great thing like a rookie driver winning a race and turn it into a racial thing. The thing I found refreshing about the article was the lack of the term "African American", because he's not.:ROTF: I really hate the media sometimes. I feel bad for the guy having to answer all the stupid racial questions from the American reporters. Oh, well, just venting.......

He's actually half black. Notice they don't mention that. Why doesn't it say "Rookie becomes first mixed race driver to win F1 race. The media have to put whatever spin they can on anything to get people's attention. I agree it's bullshit. Notice none of us mentioned his race, or the race of any of the other drivers we were talking about? It's because we don't care. He could be fucking purple with orange stripes for all I care. The media, and certain black people seem to be the only one's these days who always have to point out if someone is black. I personally find it disgusting.

the report I was reading of the race yesterday only mentioned that he was rookie, that it only took 6 races to achieve his first win, and that he was a Brit.

although I have noticed some Oz newsagencies mentioning the "first black Formula 1 winner", it seems to be a titbit of info in the body of the article, rather than a headline as it seems to be in the US press.
