PC Monitors?

Hey my monitor died today and I need to get a new one. It's an old Hitachi 17" LCD which I bought for like $300 or $400 in 2003 so I really have no idea on monitor prices. I'm thinking I want to get a widescreen as I watch movies on the PC more often than on TV anyway. I play games on occasion but I don't really give a shit about performance I mainly don't want to spend a lot of money. My local Best Buy is holding one of these for me until tomorrow:

Is this a decent monitor and a decent price? seems OK from what I've found online but I figure I'd ask around tonight before buying it.

Not Bad. You will find out most of the brands are made by the same company anyway....just relabled.

Once you worked on a 20"+ widescreen monitor you will never go back, trust me. Some sell for around $300-400. I have a BenQ and i love it and it supports 720p.
If you want to watch HD content (1080p) you'll need to get a 24"+ because only then can it show 1920x1200, but prices on those are $800+.

LG makes a good one and they're reasonably priced. Like you, my old one crapped out so this is what I decided on.

I bought it only to find out that my video card is not powerful enough to run it at native resolution (1680x1050)through the DVI, only through the VGA can it make it.

Time to start a new topic about AGP video cards...

It's true... once you go widescreen, you'll never go back.

AGP is a discontinued format. Not being made any longer.
Everything is PCI-Express (PCI-X) now.
I have an ATI Radeon X-1600 video card with 256MB memory and it kicks major ass. Dual DVI outs and runs two monitors at 1680x1050 in full color.

I really like my Dell 2007WFP 20" LCD widescreen. I got it for $250 or so with a new computer purchase last year. Separately they are in the $350 range.

I just got a 23" Apple Cinema Display at work. Bad dot ass dot com!

I also looked at the Samsung 23 (or is it 24?) inch that got good reviews. The ViewSonics are good and are inexpensive.

Check www.buydig.com for monitors. They usually have free shipping and no tax but the return policy can be a bit sucky.

Yup, monitor upgrade is the most impactful pleasure of the PC as it is what you will constantly stare at. Do need a good vid card to drive higher rez but best buy I ever made.

The still make new AGP cards even today with the NVidia 79xx series and ATI (AMD) 19xx series are both more than capable of running the latest games. AGP is not that much slower than PCI, even the 8800 GTX could run on AGP at full speed, just they introduce the new slots to sell more pc's

Some of the models are still manufactured, but in limited quantities.
They have been long since replaced by newer product lines.
Those newer cards are much faster and are not manufactured in AGP format any longer.
Try and find a new motherboard with an AGP slot... not gonna happen.
And I mean new as in manufacture date, not new old stock sitting on a shelf at Fry's electronics (USA).

They have a 22 and a 24 the 22 is about 315 the 24 is about 515 the 24 is true hd. I got the 22 for 280 on sale and am very pleased with it FWIW

Unless you guys are running some newer games most cards out there will run anything you can throw at it as far as internet, DVD, streaming video or whatever.
