Was there ever any justification for street cars to be able to go that fast? I'm not talking about NASCAR or stuff like that, I"m talking Joe Public Going To Work And Mom Going To The Grocery.
What purpose does it serve for a car to go 100MPH, aside from going 100MPH?
None.I want to depart this world the same way I arrived; screaming and covered in someone else's blood

Speed Limit is 80 MPH on some open roads in Texas. I understand Montana has some high speed limits too. I'd hate to pass someone going 70 in a car that is incapable of going 100. It'd take 10 miles!
Making it illegal to own a car that can break the law but isn't is sort of against our presumption of innocence in the US too....
I don't see a point in a car that can do 160MPH. The insurance should be high due to the value of these vehicles being higher than a Geo prism and significant historical data that shows vehicles that can do those speeds cause a disproportionate # of claims per dollar insured.
To outlaw something because it "could" cause a problem is un-American.

I'm searching for a new car and I'm reading that new cars are coming with speed regulators. I wonder if Europe would allow that. Might be able to defeat it however with hacking (I'm guessing).
My 1990 GTA kicks ass and will do at least 120mph. I want to trick it out and take it to a super speedway. I drive it less than 500 miles a year, but still pay high insurance premiums on it.

None.
-Street legal drag race cars, that aren't "trailer queens"...cars you can actually reliably drive on the street to the track and race.
-To be able to outrun someone who might be chasing you,or who would do you harm
-For emergencies....I've been in the position where having a car that did over 120 saved a friends life by making it to the hospital in time to stop her head wound from causing her to bleed to death. And no,and emergency vehicle would not have made it that far out in the desolate countryside in time to save her.
-As someone else mentioned the rising speed limits. Who's to say this won't be raised to 100+ in the future...you may think it sounds silly, but as someone already said the speed limits in Tx have went from 55->60/65->65/70->75/80 in some parts of the state over the last few years. It is needed especially on the Interstates just to get through that damn big ass state in a reasonable amount of time
And I think that at least in the 90's there was *no* daytime speed limit in parts of Montana, especially if you were to befriend the local Highway Patrolman, don't know if that's still the case, but I had a few friends who would drive there to legally test out the top end of their cars.
Having a nice fast reliable and powerful street car is so much more attainable these days thanks to aftermarket parts for fuel injected cars, you can make insane amounts of HP without needing annoying rear-end gear ratios which would kill your top end speed.
Embrace technology. And it IS un-American to make shit illegal because of what one *could* do with it. Hell my old 1981 Chevy Citation with a 2.8 V-6 would fit in that category, especially after we ported the heads and tuned it a little,I should know,I got a ticket for doing 106 in Georgia :ROTF:
Best part is,it wasn't floored

I think many car companies who make fast cars will oppose and they have a big influence (BMW, Mercedes, VW, Ferrarri, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, ...) and a lot of money to make sure it doesn't happen.
On certain German highway's there is no speedlimit and most people drive 200kph (124 mph) so i think Germany will be opposing as well
In most European countries the limit is between 110 & 130 kph (68 & 80).
Besides, if they ban all cars that can go faster than 101mph, they have to ban everything, every car with more than 80 hp goes faster than that, or they have to limit it electronically.
But, i would be happy if they do ban faster cars, but then allow us to drive 101 mph on all highways in Europe.
This is one of those many unthought of proposals by people who have too much time on their hands. I doubt it will ever be accepted.

I still feel that stupidity should be a capital crime with according punishment instead of constantly infringing on the rights of those that have done nothing in a misguided effort to combat a problem that does not exist because one is too ignorant to find the real problem.
"Assault Weapons Ban" comes to mind right off the bat.... so does writing "hot" on a cup of coffee, or demonizing computer games everytime a child that was beaten and sexually abused by dad picks up a gun and shoots his parents....
Stupid people make me sick. Stupid people with political agendas make me aggessive. Stuid people that get their way despite being against all reason sould be rounded up worldwide 2-3x a year and convinced to kill each other, with the resulting bloodshed televised live across the globe.Last edited by Zerberus; 06-14-2007, 04:08 AM.
