This is typical in a city like Cleveland. Even in the "nice" areas that ourselves as cops live in "coplands". This is due to that home security alarms are very frequent with "no cause"..which makes them a very low priority being a code 3 or 4. If a suspect is on scene and/or trying to break into your home , in that case it would be a priority 1 ..2...meaning we start to roll when we get it from dispatch.

which leads me to dispatch..they must give out the assignment out to a zone car within 10 minutes. Then the zone car has a 10 minute window to repond to that location, if a higher priority isn't pending..which is 20+ minutes by the time we do get there and that IS fast response for an alarm.
You obviously have an agenda against alarm companies.
The monitored fire devices are reason enough to put one in your home. If they didn't work - the insurance companies wouldn't be giving out discounts for having one. The industry is non-regulated, so there are some asshole companies out there - but there are also some very good companies out there.
ADT uses propriatery equipment that only they can monitor. Sloman's has a 5-year contract you sign if you want free install - (they charge a few dollars more per month for 60 months to pay for your 'free' install).
My bet is to go with a small local company that needs your business. The big companies don't care about you at all...

average time for response time in the nicest locations can be up to 20 minutes..so ..ask yourself..is that 35-50 bucks a week worth it.

Where do you get 35-50 per week? You mean month? Most companies charge around $25 per month. Alarm companies cannot control response time for Fire and Police depts.

Another point..since alrams do consume alot of our time we are mandated to issue unnecessary alarm citation for a "No cause" after responding to the same location twice..so you can be cited on the third time, and that will cost ya..and anything can set these off and do constantly..weather, pets..whatever..

This is only an issue if the system was poorly installed or very old and failing. A well designed system doesn't false alarm hardly ever.

The best alarm is a loud audible on the vulnerble places on your home that are inviting to a suspect..back door, sliding door, bak or side windows and ect..that's it.

Pure bullshit. Like a car alarm, nobody even notices. Plus in most towns there are noise ordinance restrictions and alarm sirens can only sound for a few minutes before automatically shutting off.

or a good dog..or you and your big gun!

Yup- the best defense is a good offence. You cannot reason with a dog.

              that's it..

do what alot of people do..steal a ADT sign and put it front of your home..that's all you need..that is the only thing that would deter a possibe suspect anwhoo..as far as "alarm companys".

              OK Bye.

Well, I'm just sharing 13 years experience and wisdom as a Cleveland patrolman..responding to alarms as routine on basic patrol..

what is your personal insight on this subject ..may I ask, I'd sure like to hear it..

I do give you the insurance discount..although not very substantial..

that "week" was a mistake..I meant monthly as mentioned above..use common sense man. Well, you haven't so far..why start now.

I've been to many audible alarms that were so loud and distracting ..I couldn't think to spell my name, its unbearable. Are you trying to say that a loud alarm (Radio Shack) won't distract, and scare off a suspect ..also alerting the homeowner that an intrusion possibly occured..and neighbors..what's the matter don't your neigbors like you? In my hood we watch out for each other very well...all cops and firemen mostly...none of us have alarms because we are in the know..no agendas.

"Sound restrictions"..Oh yeah, I heard of them..you mean if the alarm don't turn off in a few minutes..the police or citzen in the area may actually arrive even faster to check it out..to investigate or even complain..:ROTF:

There is no logic to that whatsoever...none, zilch, zip, nada..

Waite..do you work for a alarm company..no waite, an insurance company..or a sucker who bought the service and want others to get screwed just like you did, so you could feel better that your not the only one that did..

BTW..I arrested burglars more times than I jerked my gerkin..nah, they don't love me that much...how many did you arrest and book may I ask?

I say this with all due respect..I didn't use any bad words in this reposnse..that's unbecoming of my nature..

                Dude, you're a good guy..you know what..don't..for your sake!

Hey Chris..ditch the ADT..and get some more bees..

They're cheaper..and you could spend that extra dough on geetar strings!

Thanks officer for publicly trashing me for stating facts. You could have pm'd me, but....

So officer, are you telling us that you support the idea of shooting burglars with handguns? I have a pretty decent gun collection, but I would never hint that I'd use my guns on a public forum..I'm not sure your union or chief would be happy to hear about that. Tell me officer, do you cops in Ohio give out speeding infractions - or just shoot 'em?:ROTF:

FYI - I was a DHS contractor on a terrorism task force in New York City for 6 years and have a security company in CT. Most all my friends are cops including the guys in my band - I understand the 'cop-view' of security systems, but you guys have a responsibility not to publically trash proven security measures available to civillians just because you don't personally like them. Especially when another forumite is asking for direction about these systems.

ADT tried to get me to be their model house. They were willing to pay me for it on top of the system for free. My neighbors had it too so I guess 2 houses in a row would look great in pictures. The sales guy was really pushy and an asshole to boot. I had to take 3 steps outside my door to even hear him over my dogs and he still thought I needed an alarm system.

I had ADT for a while. The long-term contract thing rubbed me the wrong way from day one. I should've gone with my first instinct on that one, because later both their equipment and customer service sucked donkey balls. Repeated problems, and more moola for repairs to boot. Eventually, I got so fed up with them that I GLADLY paid money to buyout the balance of the contract and tell them to go f**k themselves. Anyone but ADT, dude.

                              Mike didn't I say don't..oh boy..

Yes..yes yes..by all means shoot the burgler that is intruding your home that is occupied by you and/or your family...that's your right. That's WHY we have the 2nd...yeesh. If a person is brazen enough to break into a occupied dwelling. You better be prepared for the worst case scenario without a moment to think about it!!!...he could get to your loved ones before you do..or yourself..

YES,...you are allowed to shoot 'em..we want you to..we like that!

Guns are great for hunting if you like killing bambi's mom..I don't..but hey many do..bless 'em.

You're not killing a choir boy..they usualy have a rap sheet three yeards long including robbery, rape, and assualt, and aggravated boogery..yes, put 'em out of our misery...PLEASE!!!

Traffic tickets..hmmm..I don't know much about that. See, I was on basic patrol..I stopped vehicles in c/w felonies..you know like the crimes I stated above..including burglers..who like evading from police and smashing into mini vans full of kids..you know the type...you see it on the TV..

Look man..you have to police yourself a bit..there is not enough of US to go around..OK.

Just make sure they are registered..or you can be charged with that..but that's only a pain in the ass and a misd offense.

No PMs bro..you call me out with sillyness..I will retort in the same manner..just as you...for all to see.

None of what your saying applies to police and fire response times, isn't that what alarms are for..what can a fire or intruder do in 15- 30 minutes..think.

Get a shitload of smoke detectors ..change the batteries every year..I do it twice a year when we change the clocks..old habbit. Put a couple audibles on the most vulnerable areras of your home..get a dog..be vigilaint..and lock your doors and windows..we don't live in a Brady Bunch world..that whole Brady pack would have got sodomized in a tent in NO during Katrina in 5 minutes..especially Marsha..or maybe that maid Alice..or maybe Bobbi..all of 'em..I dunno..

OK..is that good enough..can we get back to some fun stuff now..like old Van Halen and whatnots.

You're making me talk about police shit wayyyy too much for my liking, and that pisses me off..This cop wants to shoot his goo on his wife's ass and pull out the 7 string..

I gave good advice..as good as your going to get...free of charge..you don't have to thank me..because I love you guys..I'd tell my own flesh and blood what I tell you fuckers..truth!

Mike never doubt me..to doubt me is to get F'd in the A..and I never want to have to say..I told ya so.

                              I'm done..have fun

                              Bye,

                              Bill Z Bub

BTW I'm retired..NO, I'm not telling that story again..but 13 years patrolling the ghetto taught me a shitload..more than I wanna know..trust me..I take meds to forget!

Well, the fire part is a nice thing for sure. Might be worth the 25-40 a months for that. They always respond fast for that stuff.

In the local suburbs here, police response time is great on alarms, they have nothing else to do. I've set off my shop alarm to have them there in 4-8 minutes.

I truly know in the big cities, response time is generally terrible, particularly on the weekends. Listening to the police radio when it was not digital, showed them mopping up alarm calls at like 4-5am after it all died down in the neighborhoods many hours after the alarm. Sometimes as long as 8 hours...

I acccidently set off our practice space alarm around 6pm once, (never got a call from ADT, thought they didn't get it) we went and did a show, and the cops came as we were loading back in after 3:40am, haha... Just great...

I can see why Bill says a loud alarm in the house as the perp will bum out, and the neighbors will call, giving the cops a bit more impetus. If my neighbors alarm goes off, I'll certainly check it out and see what's up. Many suburbs wont allow that at all tho.

I'd want a private alarm to notify me in my sleep if my house has bbeen breached as my dogs sleep more sound than I do! haha... I just have intercoms for that.

To address another comment, I do support that if an occupied home is breached, the invaders are likely very dangerous and accepting they will likely have to harm the occupants. An appropriate response from the occupants who are obviously in fear of serious harm is certainly suitable.
