Regardless of whether there are worse things in the world, it's inhumane, and unnecessary. That is a fact. Synthetic fur is cheaper, and just as good these days. Even if it wasn't, clubbing the baby seals in the head is fucking disgusting. There is no excuse, and no justification whatsoever. I say ban the sale of real fur entirely, and then there won't be a market for it.

I'm not sure this solution would work either. Elephant and rhino hunting is banned but there is still a demand for these items so the poaching and trading goes on.

One would hope that common sense and human decency would prevail...

Sure, I know what you're saying, and I know it wouldn't stop it entirely, but it would certainly cut it down a lot. Imagine how many rhinos and elephants would be killed if it was completely legal.
