and tradition?? I'm sure they've hunted seals for furs in the past. but those furs were to protect themselves from the cold weather. or like someone said, for food. But killing the seals for making a tidy profit so that inebriated celebrities like Paris Hilton can cover themselves up in an air-conditioned room with red carpets...what sort of F'd up tradition is that??

No. There are no Inuit people involved in the annual taking of the 325,000 seals in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and off the Northern coast of Newfoundland and the Southern coast of Labrador. The Inuit do not favor harp seals, but rather target ring and bearded seals. According to the 2004 Annual Report of the North American Marine Mammal Commission harp seals are taken by the Inuit people only for use as food for their dogs.

Why? Are you still under the impression that they hunt baby seals? They hunt adult seals, or does that make a difference? They don't club baby, or adult seals. That isn't their tradition. Again, does that make any difference? There aren't too many mega-marts above the arctic circle. They depend on seals, and dogs to survive. Doesn't sound like an option to hunt seals to extinction, or let the dogs starve.

I'm wasting my time here. There is enough info out there, but I know no one will look for it. Oh well, it's easier to blame the natives even though they aren't the problem.
