While Blink182 do indeed blow and yet suck at the same time, I'm assuming the kid's buddy in question is also 16-ish. Also while you and I would find their entire catalog easier to play than the rhythm to Back In Black, at least the kid has stuck with it enough to learn all the songs from any one band, and isn't just fumbling through a song and calling it an achievement (like a certain x-games chick that doesn't come here anymore).

While I don't see where the "direct quote" specifically stated or even insinuated that Blink182 was better or equal to Van Halen, I think the kid deserves at least some credit for applying himself to guitar.
You might even be able to offer him a couple of lessons and thereby "spread the disease", so to speak.

I'm a "young 'un" and while I love the classics, I also quite like Blink 182 and other such bands. They're not my favourites by a long way, but I can still appreciate there music.

And, I think if all the modern 'popular' bands were doing Van Halen-esque solos a lot of you would then be saying, "Well, they're just trying to be something they're not" or "They're copying Van Halen, they should try doing there own stuff"

Blink 182 have always been a crappy band, but I can't stand anything they've written after Take Off Your Pants And Jacket. They try too hard to keep up with today's popular sound.

Their "Dude Ranch" CD is acutally not that bad. That was before they got famous. They were my favourite band when I was in 5th grade .

Shit guys! I'll be 37 years old here in a few weeks. I like Blink 182 and have all their CD's. But, then again I have a copy of ABBA Gold, Simon and Garfunkle and the Bee Gees. Ok! All are free to poke fun now...........

I also own a Fender Tom De Long Strat in surf green. Main reason I bought it was it reminded me of an old Charvel and it was about the only one bucker axe out there I could afford at the time.

In an earlier post Avenge Seven Fold were mentioned. I have to say, Zakky Vengeance and Synister Gates are 2 of the best axe grinders I've heard come out of the recent metal scene. It seems like a 100 years ago I was bitching that every time I went into a Guitar Center all I heard was Nirvana and Soundgarden tunes (great music sans shred solos). Then it was nothing but Green Day and Blink. Now I hear 12 year olds sweep picking like it's nothing and flying through scales.

All music is revolutionary. What was cool back in the day and much missed by the masses always comes back around in a big and sometime more inovative way. Shred will never die.

Don't get me started on it!

At least at college there's some people that listen to real music, and I hang out with the conservatory crowd when I want a good talk/discussion on anything music related and of course free ganj

I actually am going to show him some vh tricks this coming week. I actually listen to blink 182, but definitely not for their guitar god-like skills. Alot of the stuff I listen to is pretty lame, but I can overcompensate for listening to Abba by sweep picking and tapping the crap out of my pc1!
