I have and I always come back to the same few points: 1) when I owned one guitar I played the shit out of it, now that I own 40 I spend more time farting around with 'em, adjusting 'em, maintaining 'em, buying 'em, selling 'em, talking about 'em, etc. than I do playing 'em ... I'd really like to get back to playing the guitar; 2) I've sold hundreds (literally) over the years and have never had seller's remorse yet; 3) there's really no reason for me to have this much money tied up in gear, not that I need the cash it might generate but it's just began to seem a bit silly to me; and 4) my penis is nowhere near small enough to require a collection like this.

Wow, I know exactly what you mean. I go through a continuous cycle of buying guitars, then feeling somehow burdened by having so many (and also kinda guilty, because I'm not that great of a player and really only play on the couch anymore) and sell off some of them, then see something else I want and slowly build it back up again. The only real progress I've made is to decide not to spend "new" money on my collection, but rather to force myself to sell something every time I buy something.

I have 7 guitars now, which is way too many for me to justify, but it would be hard for me to give any of them up, as they are all unique in some way. So, I'm sitting tight for now, but I continually ask myself which ones I would keep if I could only keep 1, or 2, or 3, etc., and then figure out which ones I could most easily get rid of. I'm neurotic. But it's cool to hear that others think about some of the same things.

Actually, the one I play the most is probably my acoustic, which is just a Samick, but for some reason, I find it virtually impossible to drop big money on an acoustic. To me, they're like an appliance - useful, but not exciting.

It's interesting to me that you would pick the Vetta to keep. Which guitar is your #1 - and why? (Mine is my JEM 7VWH).

Maybe but to paraphrase one of my all-time favorite movies, "I think this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody's part ... and I'm just the guy to do it." There's more at work here than a mere desire to trim the ol' collection down a bit and the initial asking price has to be such that it guarantees my fun isn't cut short by my finding a buyer too quickly.

I've been thinking about this too. I only own 8 guitars but I have 2 that I love and would keep. The other 6 would pay for a decent vacation for my family... Damn... Now you got me thinking...

I've been kicking the idea of moving some / most out for a while purely, at least until the last couple of days, because I have too many and it really is becoming work rather than a joy to own them. But when a couple of guys who have collections that put mine to shame, vintage stuff very $pendy, contacted me privately and told me that I was absolutely nuts to even consider parting with all of 'em it struck me that I might be in possession of something of some slight interest to a few folks. Never having been one to pass up the opportunity to do something outrageous it occurred to me that if the sale of the lot might generate some small degree of interest out there on the 'net it might also be a great opportunity for a little shameless self-promotion. Nothing wrong with that y'know!

I have a small/medium sized collection myself (31 guitars) and wouldn't mind having more.
I would say, thinning out the herd is good--it's quality over quanity, right?
This said, I don't think I could have just one guitar--the personalities are too different. Some for the whammy stuff, some for the clean stuff, there are rhythm guitars, solo guitars, sustain guitars, and then there are guitars that don't play so well but just have a certain tone and mojo that makes them enjoyable.

I agree it's a hindrance to being creative, and weighs you down, so I would say selling off is good but keep 3-4.

I hear you. How many pieces do you have? I'm assuming quite a bit. I know I've seen pics of some really, really nice GMP's. Are they all GMP's?

And if your not playing them, what good are they? I justify it by telling myself they are functional works of art. Sometimes I enjoy looking at them more than playing them. But that really speaks to the quality of guitarist I am. Not so quality. But if mantaining all of them takes time away from playing, give 'em up...
