I think Mike deserves batter than this, considering he prolly put alot of things on hold (personal and buisness) for a very long time as a loyal member of VH.
Ed was a mess health wise and unstable for the obvious reasons. everything was uncertain and in a bad place,,cain't blame him for hooking up with a friend/bandmate in that camp and go what he does best..have fun, make music and tour. Mike was buying bought his time , passed on who knows what for years on end..for what..to be replaced by Ed's kid.
No, he was punished for being the most stable person in the band..makes sense to me.
Don't sell Mike short because "he's just the bass player". Mike is one of the most solid players in the Rock world IMO!
His contribution to the style, sig and sound of Van Halen is just as significant as Steve is to Maiden , Geezer to Sabbath, Jones to Zep, Bruce to Cream, Squire to Yes, Lee to Rush, Gene to Kiss..and so on..None of whom would be the same without."Bill, Smoke a Bowl and Crank Van Halen I, Life is better when I do that"
