I have no doubt the tour will take place, every date as planned. Roth has been dying to get back on this cow for years. The other two have no other options: Sammy hates them and none of the fans want a brand new singer.
Theyve gone to some trouble to make this work (rehab, quiet in the press, pushed the start back etc) You'll get a workmanlike set of Van Halen songs from some middle aged businessmen, for a docile herd of balding white consumers. The evening will be indistiguishable from an American Idol show, just no judges. Harmless corporate fun for all.

I didn't get to see Roth with VH though. Now I'll have to think about that.

Exactly, I agree..My wife like Meatloaf back in the day. They never grabbed me. But the dude still can sing good as ever..

I liked when Chris Farley used to do him on SNL!!!

The image of him with tits in in "Fight Club" still haunts me too..

I think Meatloaf is playing the day after the Brad Delp tribute and tickets are only $10. I'm seriously thinking about going - Bat Out Of Hell rocks

[QUOTE=kmanick;964384]Without MA this is a travesty.
and I agree with Bill, listen to the bass lines in "I'm the one" (especially behind the second solo). That is definitely a bass player not a guitarist.

+1 Sounds like a bassist trying to do a Tim Bogert
impression. And no guitar player is going to grab
              that stuff...

Don't sell Mike short because "he's just the bass player". Mike is one of the most solid players in the Rock world IMO!

I learned and studied his every nuance.

His contribution to their style, sig and sound of Van Halen is just as significant as Steve is to Maiden , Geezer to Sabbath, Jones to Zep, Bruce to Cream, Squire to Yes, Lee to Rush, Gene to Kiss..and so on..None of whom would be the same without.

                That's what I think!
Hey Bill, I didn't mean to sound that harsh about MA "I could care less about MAs bass playing...", I was just making a point about the background vocals. In fact, I've been listening to a LOT of VH lately (my 4-disk changer in the car has VH in all 4 slots), seriously contemplating looking for guys for a VH tribute, and I've noticed MAs bass playing. I thought of starting a thread about it because he is playing some greats lines on these tunes. I would like to add "Push Comes To Shove" to the ones you and Nick already mentioned. I think the problem is a lot of his good bass lines are buried in the mix, plus most people just think of the beginning of RWTD and his silly live solos, so he doesn't get much cred. But he's a good bass player.

As far as Fair Warning, I've read that interview a few times on the crapper and I believe EVH said he played the bass on the demos but was bitching about MAs tone/playing on the record. I don't remember him ever saying that he played the actual lines that are on the record.

And horns, you're absolutely right, there is a big difference between a bass player and a guitarist playing bass! When I joined that cover band I was in back in VA in '03, I was brought in to play bass and we were a 4-piece. After about 6 months we found a real bassist (who could also sing, which I definitely can't -lol) and I was back home on the guitar, then we became a 5-piece. Which made sense anyway because the guitarist wasn't very good and I took over most of the lead playing. Now I played my parts fine, it was mostly cheesy 80s/90s covers (8675309, My Sharona, 3 AM, etc.) but I never considered, or called, myself a bassist. I was a guitarist playing bass. Your quote about just playing root notes and playing it safe - that was me

And I wouldn't sell anyone short for being "just the bass player", I love good bassists - Squire, Geezer, Sheehan, Alderete, Harris, etc. But Geddy's my favorite (Rush is also my fav. band). When I was playing bass in the band, I would work on some Rush tunes at home for practice and that stuff was a bitch! And then I thought, shit, he's also singing at the same time, and sometimes holding down notes on the taurus pedals too!
                Unleash the fury.....Texas style!

Yeah man exactly ..MA is so buried in the mix it's unbelievable. Luckily I have a older pro-logic stereo that somehow let me hear the bass and drum tracks..seperated from the guitar tracks..so I was able to sit and learn what I never really heard before. As much as I did learn..once in a while I'll discover something I glossed over or didn't pick up..he's a pretty busy player at times..it's pretty easy to do.

We did the trib thing for over two years , every weekend ..elaborate show and set backdrop, the whole nine yards..2 1/2 to almost three hours set with no break..lots of songs to cover..

I guess that why I'm go on the defense for the guy..I played his part and it was alot of work..

I know many of you heard a sample of my trib..I have tucked away..if anyone wants to check it out..I was proud of it.

...I have a vid of this show..it's pretty cool!!

The singer actually auditioned for VH, it made local papers. We were going to be DLR's back up band but he went to Vegas..then came back a few years later with the Atomic Punks (who we kill) with the Sam & Dave tour.

We were broke up by then..due to my personal life mostly.

Oh well..but we ruled for some time. Ed heard Rich (singer) ..Dave heard us ..Ed was peaved because of our original name "Valeries Revenge"...so we changed it...true shit.

THAT was the very reason why he did NOT get the gig..

Which is Ironic because Owens got the job for sounding like Rob..Tim always came to our shows..we got smashed!!
