    Very Good..

Rich parents or generous parents that won't impede his goals and growth!

I'm the latter. I have music in my DNA that was passd to my son who is still 12 years old. He could play drums better than most of my peers who played 30 years or so...So , I bought him a big Sonor kit...who am I to say no?

He took interest in guitar so I bought him a baby strat..he quickly out grew that and could see he was a natural, whenever I showed him somthing. So I bought him a Jackson last Chrstmas..he now constructs entire songs that are not far from my own abilities...he'll be kicking my ass next year , even if I don't it easy for him.

It took me over 10 year to "slap" on bass, to really get it down right. It took him a weekend to slap "Higher Ground" as good as I could..

You know, thinking about by own son is giving me a intrest in Wolfie..who just may take his dad's place..years from now. I still don't think it's "right" for MA..but I'm not doubting the kid's abilities.

Anyone ever hear Jeff Loomis at at 16???..what he does is HIS own thing..it wasn't already written for him..I just personally respect that MUCH more

Now THIS was a natural metal "God" in the making!!!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vT8491wC8fE

Hey, for 14 years old, the kid smokes. However, the question remains, can he write a song?

Oh yeah, and I think Kelly User hit the nail on the head. When I was 14 I saved up $40 to buy myself a cheapo used plywood piece of shit guitar from a friend of my sister. It wouldn't stay in tune, and the action was probably 1/4" off the fretboard. I didn't even have an amplifier. Sometimes my sister let me use her little 10 watt amp that she got for Xmas from Sears. When I was 15-16, I worked at McDonalds, and saved up to buy a real guitar, an NJ Series Bich, and eventually got a Peavey Bandit. That was the only amp I had until I was 19 years old.

Now the question is: would I have been as good as that kid if I had the gear? No, probably not, but I guarantee you I'd be better. Also, if that kid had the gear I had, he would suck too.

The FIRST thing you said matters most ..period.

I can't and I wont do "covers' ..I did bass covers..but that's nothing for me.

I could do a pretty mean "eruption"..

But I'm just "copying" someone else' stuff..even if I play like shit or nail it..it will NEVER be from MY heart or brain..so what's the point.

No matter how well you do a "cover" someone will always do it better than you. Not the case with a original ..only the creator could play it the way it should be played.

..I hera ya Shawn, Well, I don'y go anywhere to spend money, and pretty thrifty in general..other than "bills".

My son's heart in really into it. I don't push it on him in the slightest..I want him to come to me..he sure does!

I taught my son to be one of the best drummers in cleveland by merely tapping my fingers on a wall and say.."do this"..not kidding. Then he'll do it..and I'll throw a riff I knew would work with it, then we just go from there..now after practicing on his own..he's got his own thing going..sometimes it makes me grab my guitar and say.."Play what you were just doin' again!!!!"..

OK, I gotta tell you a personal story. My wife came to me and asked if Vinny showed his song yet. I said "No"..which is weird because everytime he comes up with anything he shows me..maybe my demeanor was like..ehh, it's ok...in hindsight. So I go upstairs in his room and he's playin' his Jackson and Line 6..I go.."Hey, I hear you got a song"..he looks a little embarrassed..So, I said "don't feel silly, just go for it, like I'm not even here"...he plays the entire song approx four minutes long..Intro V-C-Bridge/Solo-V-C-outro..halfway thru I had to hide I was choked up..because it was so fucking good..lots of heart and feel..he played it like he meant it..I gained my composure by the time he was done and I just grabbed him and kissed him on his head..we were both so proud without saying a word..we were just smiling..we both knew. There was shit in there I could use, the only riff thrown at me that was "worthy" enough.

The drum thing blew me away, but I'm not a drummer so I didn't really have that direct connection, even tho I was his only "teacher"..but this, I planted a seed , and watched it blossomed into something more than my expectataions

Shawn that is priceless..when I go..all my guitars (some very nice ones)..my amps..they're all his.

I'm not rich my no means..I'm pretty stingy, especially after the wife lost her job..but I make sure he has all the things I really didn't. My gear when I was his age was crap..I had to be a "hustler"..my two prize possessions were two Peavey Mark III heads in 1980..just because I saw Steve Harris use them on the "Killers" album ..all my money and wheelin' and dealin' went to that set up...I had two cool Peavey one 18" two 10" cabs for each too..I had a good tone even when I started.

I knew with a good sound even a medicore player could sound good..and get guys better than youself in bands! I always work with the best musicians around here...and the only singers worth a damn!

Hey Horns (and anyone else with musically-motivated kids), how did your kid get into music? How old was he when he started? Did it just "happen" or did you have to help it along? How do you get them to practice?

Well this is easy to answer. I always played music or my guitars constantly..he prolly heard the jams while still in the womb! I bought him a kiddie piano, then a baby acoustic guitar..I should him "tubular bells" on the baby piano..and he picked it up..he's was about three. Then he used to always go in the kitchen cabinet and take out all the pots and pans and drive me fuggin' nuts..but he did that everday..and beat on 'em. So I went to Toys R US and bought him a $100 kiddie drum set..took it home and tolld him to do a 4/4th drum beat boom boom bam ..boom boom bam and he did it..in perfect meter..in one week me and Vinny were playing "wasted" by Def Leppard..his first song..My freind Tall Paull came over and could NOT belive the meter and feel he had at five years old. He insisted "dude you have to buy him a good set"..in fact Vinny used two feet on on kick pedal on that kiddie set..to do double kicks..he figured it out by listening to heavy music. So the next Chrsitmas I bought his a standrad five pc Sonor that came with Sabian Rid/ Crash high-hats..but I bought him a double kick pedal..he took to it like a fish to water..I have video of him when he was 6 or 7 just thrashin' away with me...we were doing "High Speed Death Rool"..I wrote that with him. So he just got older , stronger , faster and is always putting fills and rolls together in with his grooves..I'm not easy on him..in fact I'm pretyu hard on him sometimes..like bandmates are..sometimes I say ''You suck, just forget it"..but he'll come back down and nail it hardcore..so that shit works..He's going to be my drumm,er ..no doubt..he's definitely worthy..besides as time passe we been playing my songs so he knows them very well..I like the way he plays them better than my old drummer..much more dynamic and fell..no lessons..all self-taught.

Same goes for guitar and bass..he watch taped when I was in that VH trib and see me doing my bass solo and he just loves it..I think he's just proud..so he wanted a bass..he was slapping the first week..what took me about 10 years to figure out. But I didn't have anyone to walk me thru this stuff..I was on my own.

Lately we been helping each other out ..he's been playing thru my Marshall and me with my Bogner and we'll sart playing a thrash riff together untill it's nailed..nothing too fancy..but them I'll start soloing over it ..then he's speed picking these black metal shapes..and I'll play different harmonies over them..so he just much help to me as I am to him..I'm prolly geting more out of it really..because I never had someone just hold down a groove for me to play over..so this is opening doors that were never there for me.

He'll be 13 this October, I guarantee any of you would take him as a drummer..trust me!

I did all that too Bill with my sons..who btw are 11 (turns 12 next month) and my oldest is 13 nad startsd 8th grade . Part of me wanted to force it on them but i just want them to be themselves and do what they want. I always tell them I'm here to show you all I know whenever you are ready. They both have their own guitars and amps. I think they do have the interest but do not have the dedication to practice and progress.

When I was their age I didnt even play guitar and was more into sports even though I had an acoustic and could figure out parts of Boston & Heart type of shit. I was 17 when I got my first electric and that was a Hondo Explorer and Randy Rhoads pushed me to progress. I bought my own good stuff myself with my own money from workin at McDonalds and the mall as a teen...thats why I still have the 70's strat and 83 2203 and 1960A cab

I'm far from wealthy myself even though I have tons of guitars and a hand full of nice amps. The boys will get it all if I die or will be able to use any of it if they advance like that 14 yr old did.

Wow Shawn Our kids are almost the same age, my first "real" guitar was a natural "Hondo" Explorer but it had DiMarzios someone put in it..wow!

I had a MXR distortion and 6 band eq I put infrom of my bass amp to practice guitar..it got me by for practice.

My first real guitar amp was a Marshall 2203 but it was a older Marshall cab with 70 celestions in ..I used a Boss overdrive and DD3 delay with that. Then I accumulated a bunch of amps..my small room was packed with them..prolly a dozen at one time..just buyin', trading, selling..alway kept my favorite ones for a while. I was making some dough doing that and getting into nicer amps!

You're doing right thing Shawn..they have to have it in their heart to pick it up and go with it. Then yhey will come to you. I hope they do..it's a great connection for you and your sons. My son is really into sports, he's joining Baskekball soon. Wretling was going good until she broke his arm in half..ummm so that put a damper on that!

I always played no matter what was going on in my life work, girls, school, girls..and girls..Guitar/Bass was in my blood there was no stopping it!!

That was the only way my father could ground me. I didn't like to go out. I just stayed homed and played my guitar..so he used to take my guitar for a week or two..man, that was crushing..but effective..

Wow i think im gonna go burn all my shit now. That kid is insane. For 14 or 18 or 25. He's just plain good. Weather or not he can wright a song now i dont think is important. He will wright songs in the future. And who knows he may even pass up Satch himself for melodic instrumentals. He's got those 4 tunes pretty nailed. I heard a little sloppiness here and there especailly in Black Star. But it was all 99% there. Give the kid some credit for working at it as mch as he does. The ability to wright will come later. Who knows he may have already writen stuff and just hasn't posted it. Why i dont know. But it could be. I've been playing for 26 years and that kid smothers me in every aspect. I am a hack and always will be. But i enjoy playing if not for anybody else. I enjoy for me

No doubt the boy has skills..no question..

But I'd rather write a song along the lines of of Green Day or The offspring, who I don't really like. Than to nail "blackstar" that has been covered by the billions since 1984.. Yes, the kid gets major props from me..but I'm much more impressed with creating music than copying it. I'm sure he has original that''ll kick my dick. I even said these words to Matt Pigott who did some covers in the MP3 section..I said that's nice, but I'd rather hear something original..and boom..he posted it..NOW, I'm a fan of his work..before nope..now yep!

I love Uli Roth, he's my fave.. but you won't be hearing be learning "Sails of Charon" anytime soon..for one I can't do it better than him, and there' already many covers of it..so fuggit.

At 14, I was playing "yesterday" by the beatles, and not even all that well. Couldn't hold a barre chord down much. And its pretty much the same for just about evey other guitarist I ever knew.

                                Can he write a tune?
Are there better guitarists in the world??
Does he have his own style? Is he original?

Who the fuck cares? Inappropriate questions.

He is WAAAYYYY ahead of the curve for a 14 year old guitarist.

The day will come, (and not all that far off I think) when the word 'shred' won't mean shit to anybody, as the bar for average technique will raise to a level where it will become commonplace. Kids start way earlier now, and and use metronomes, sweeping, economy picking, etc right from the get go. There will always be someone who's 'the fastest' and so on, but the average player will have far better command of the intrument than ever.
