But I'd rather write a song along the lines of of Green Day or The offspring, who I don't really like. Than to nail "blackstar" that has been covered by the billions since 1984..
+1000 And I'm 15 and I paly through an Epiphone Valve Junior with a beat to hell Traynor cab with a mix n matched bunch of pedals, and he has a touring rig. I'm not bitter :ROTF: But he doe shave skills (more then me hehe) but skills mean nothing if you can't write songs.

Are there better guitarists in the world??
Does he have his own style? Is he original?

Who the fuck cares? Inappropriate questions.

He is WAAAYYYY ahead of the curve for a 14 year old guitarist.

The day will come, (and not all that far off I think) when the word 'shred' won't mean shit to anybody, as the bar for average technique will raise to a level where it will become commonplace. Kids start way earlier now, and and use metronomes, sweeping, economy picking, etc right from the get go. There will always be someone who's 'the fastest' and so on, but the average player will have far better command of the intrument than ever.
Ummm yeah..I hung onto every word you said. I said the kid has skills..but what you didn't elabaorate on is..can he write a song..creating music is what it's all about..or your just a very skilled parakeet..makes no difference to me..one way or the other.

There is people who make music, and people who copy it. I'd rather make music that is liked or "copied" by others..it's much more gratifying IMO..Did you hear my VH trib..it is dead on balls VH..I got nothing from that..it was "fun" but it meant nothing to me..I gave it my best, but I really didn't even try..it paid well

      I have heros..I don't emulate them..they inspire me..and that what they should do...IMO!

bottom line the kid has skills, but if he DON'T write anything decent..he's not going anywhere playing "
      "blackstar"..and you have my word!

A cover gig is a part-time job..period. Your not going to seen him in any articles that matter, and your not going to get any play whatsoever, not even college radio..at best he'll be a local hero in a small shit town with little recognition...with a crowd of 20+ people on a good night including his entire family and friends..and band.

I know people who have tons of skill and theory oozing out there ass, but can NOT write one cohesive song to save their life..and I know this!
"Bill, Smoke a Bowl and Crank Van Halen I, Life is better when I do that"
      Donnie Swanstrom 01/25/06..miss ya!

I agree..my young friend..but you'll hone what skills you do have and develope a syle/sig all your own in the years to come..that is what counts..having your very own style...now that's a concept!!!
