    Thunder Alley
I haven't seen this movie in about 20 years but it's about a farm boy who plays his guitar in the barn and joins a local band and leads them to a rock festival.

I was gonna post this, it's one of my favorite movies. It never gets old, anyone who hasn't seen it should definitely watch it.

Dismal. But only because the bloke playing Johnny Rotten is a deadringer for Les Dennis. Anyone British will tell you right there and then, it is doomed.
So long as you haven't had to endure Family fucking Fortunes over the years and know who Les Dennis is, you might enjoy it.

Try "The Commitments", not Metal, but a good film about a band trying to get their shit together.
So I woke up,rolled over and who was lying next to me? Only Bonnie Langford!

                          Since you said rock :

                          The Buddy Holly Story
                          Eddie and the Cruisers

                          +1 to The Commitments
(interesting fact #2,987 - all the actors in the movie were the actual band members, interesting fact #2,988 - the singer was only 16 at the time)

Oh and for the hell of it :

River's Edge (yes it has nothing to do with a band, but Heavy Metal didn't either,so bite me)
-1000 for a young Keanu Reaves
+10000 for a not so young Dennis Hopper
+1000000 for a soundtrack that has bands like Slayer and Fates Warning

Interesting fact #2,989 - they still gig, and I re-valved the guitarist's Fender Twin last week.
