Inmates in a Japanese jail found about 300 marijuana plants in the exercise yard, but instead of getting high, they reported the discovery to the authorities. Last year, guards pulled up about 300 plants in the Abashiri prison on Hokkaido, northern Japan, and treated the ground with herbicide to prevent any recurrence. Despite their efforts, the weed sprouted again this year. Prison officials think soil brought in for the exercise yard may have contained marijuana seeds. Takashi Nomura, a prison guard, said inmates are allowed to cultivate vegetables and did not appear to have added marijuana. "We only grow potatoes and beans here," he said. In physical checkups, prison officers found no sign any inmates had taken advantage of the wild marijuana.
