I blame pro tools, and the rise of the "copy and paste" generation!

The song is either good or it sucks , that's how I look at bands and artisits , by the songs. The 60's were a launching pad, and Jimi Hendrix was EVH until EVH came along-lol You had the yarbirds, Zeppelin, Stones (tied for favorite band) zeppelin, Deep Purple, Beatles-(duh),etc. but the 70's had hard rock, soft rock, middle of the way rock, dicso, punk and the rebirth of hard rock at the end thank god.Alll in all, the most progress had been made in the 70's.
+1, ACG...I threw this same question out at work today, and one of the answers that came out was in line with that...I'm 43 and listened to a lot of radio when I was young. The kick that started that period throughout the seventies I think came from the earlier rise. And then it became a label for rock, like "Arena Rock", and the marketing was on. More evidence of what I'm thinking...what about the strange mix of bands that would do shows together, such as Sly and the Family Stone in the same show as the Allman brothers...all due to a lack of "forced marketing". There's also the retro-cash theory, that what you were listening to when you were eighteen becomes what you can spend real mony on when you hit forty. So there's a twenty year gap in what is "hip" again. Happy days hit in the seventies, etc.

Creedance Clearwater Revival is STILL the most badass band on the planet!

but seriously, John Fogerty is probably the greatest songwriter of all time, if not, easily in the top 5.

'Lookin' Out My Backdoor' ALONE should put him in the top ten

Two words. Robert Johnson. And all those English guys in the early '60's that loved all the other early Blues guys. I was born in 1950 and grew up with the 4 Seasons and all the rest. When Zep I came out in '69 (?) it was for me a music-life changing event. It just got better from there. Why? Because of the "New" effects and the mixing. Well, the Beatles started that. But anyway. From 1969 through 1974 were the best years. By far.

I'm thankful for all the responses, but I need to bump this thread. My speech requires "visual aid", so I'm just going to bring some of these albums with me. The problem, for me is, I don't know my audience all that well. The speech has written itself, which is great, because I cannot speak from notes. I tried, twice in a row, and I blew the endings bad. So, as always, what is the wrap up? I think it is...we have moe choices than ever thought possible. So do you actively still listen to this? I do. I keep coming back. I keep catchng things I never noticed. Anyone else?

I was thinking about this the other day when I was daydreaming at work. I think back in the day people were more captivated by music in the sense that they thought, "All I need is a guitar and I can make music/be somebody/etc" where now people think all they need is a shot in a reality show (making the band, american idol, etc) or a drum machine (shitty rap, 50 cent, etc) and they can live the good life.

Music will always be influence by what came out shortly before its time and all that the current crop of shit is drawing from is the worst of the 80s and 90s. I know there are bands influence by better music but the industry doesn't realize that there is a market for it. Of course I've noticed more and more that modern metal is gaining a foothold in the charts but I can't imagine it becoming like it was in the late 80s.
I'm gonna eat your brains and gain your knowledge.

I always wondered how TV/Radio ratings worked. After all, the survey doesn't actually know what you are listening to. Forms are sent out, but there is no way to tell whether they are filled out accurately. And best-sellers get driven by airplay, so lemmings follow others and "have to have" whatever is "popular". So as you say, the current crop of garbage is generally driven by a prior crop of garbage. Maybe it is my age. I do have a lot of fondness for early metal. But that's too specific. There have been a lot of others here that validated my initial thought that in a short span of time, a lot of great, diverse music broke out into the market. Then there was a sharp decline.

I only wish that there would have been VIAGRA during the 70's. Great music, great drugs, and a raw dick!

I'm probably still in the probationary timeframe.
