All the years of being the "Borg" of baseball are catching up in a big way.
Kudos to the Sox for standing up to them and going toe to toe with them
in the payroll department. This franchise pretty much destroyed the
competitive balance of the game with their penchant for overspending
during the 90's. Furthermore,IMHO they were largely responsible for the
strike that wiped out the World Series.......the biggest sticking point was
the owner's insistance on a salary cap. They didn't get it,but the whole
revenue sharing concept was a direct result of this. So now they gotta
pack it up and go home early once again.......boo hoo,couldn't happen
to a classier franchise!! Here's an idea.......instead of trying to spend the
equivalent of the GNP of your average small nation on the biggest name
player available,try doing some scouting and go after the players that
are best suited to fill the needs of the team. They wont of course,but
that's just fine with us up here!!

Well it's true that 04 did alot to boost the morale of the fanbase here. As
well as putting the "curse" crap to bed. But even if 04 didn't happen,I'd
still stand by my comments. During the last Yankees run in the 90's,it was
as much about George's wallet as it was about baseball.

Also,I don't think anyone who knows baseball could agree with the way
this team was constructed. All offense.......mediocre pitching,this is not
a recipe for success. IMO there was no way they could succeed in the
playoffs........you need to have depth in the rotation to go anywhere.
It's clear to see that they were built to put up big numbers against the
Rangers,Royals,and whatever other crappy pitching that was out there
during the regular season.

Now if the Sox take the series this year it'll be very entertaining watching
George fire everyone from the front office down to the peanut vendors!!

In what way where the Yankees all about the wallet in their run from '95 thru'2001?
We had more homegrown guys then as we do today than the red sox. I'm not saying the yankees don;'t spend, but you do know we spend 15 a year on Arod, and texas still picks up the other 10 mill. each year. There is no baseball without the yankees, they write one hell of a check that goes into the pockets of the smaller market teams, but they never put the money back into their teams and they still complain. I hate the money buying the championship argument, it's proved that it doesn't work if there is no chemistry between the players. And as far as the makeup of the team, The yankees didn't put up numbers against k.C. and Texas only, we knocked the snot out of Cleveland and swept them this season, and I do recall winning 9 of the last 12 against the red sox as well, not including the 5 game whatever you want to call it last year, and deep down , you're lucky you're not playing the yankees. Some sox players were not disappoited about it either. The Yankees also started over 16 rookies this season as starting pitchers who had never pitched in the bigs before, thus the shitty start. Wang got hurt, Mussina, Hughes, they were hit so hard with injuries in the pitching dept. i didn't know who the hell was on the mound during April and most of May. Texas gave Arod the 25 mill a year contract, and the yankees ended up bailing them out, so tell me how during the 90's it was about the wallet? In the 80's, and since '01 it was about the wallet, and both times are proving to be unsuccessful. Yeah I'm pissed off as you can tell, I wanted to play the sox very badly in the ALCS, i think this series goes 7 games, and the winner is going to be the Sox in game 7 over cleveland, due to schilling turning into a pitcher again. That's my call if a gun is to my head to pick the winner, so after your 2nd baseman and Pedroia, or the left fielder, whoever who is who, the rest of the team is all bought position wise. 70 mill. on J.D. drew? Hope he keeps up his hitting as of late, otherwise he'll get crucified. Your 2nd baseman is gutsy and i like that, Lowell had a career year, Papi's numbers were down but still great, but without manny behind him, he's a guy who can be neutralized. Health issues abound for your sox, so tell theo to bust the wallet out again in the winter, if arod leaves the yankees he's a fool, or Scott Boras is. I don't think anyone will pay 30 mill. no matter that he was the reason we were in the playoffs at all, once he got there, he had nothing to hit as the guys behind him were slumping so they pitched around him. Jeter had his first bad series, Posada and Matsui couldn't hit themselves in the head with the bat, so that neutralized Arod, Wang and Clemens were on another planet, Pettitte was great, Cano was incredible at bat only, and Abreu is on opiates and PCP, I'm convinced. the Sox' payroll is at what now? And the yankees didn't have the highest payroll in the league during the 90's. Maybe at one point but not for a great deal of it , that i know. Call me pissed off, but it's only because I know we had looked past Cleveland, big mistake, and Clemens and his elbow were toast over two weeks ago. We had Sabbathia chased out of the game by the 5th, and could have won that game, but there is no middle relief, that is what is missing on the Yankees. The 4 out of 5 series wins were due to the starters. then the jeff nelsons, Mike stantons, Mendoza's, and whoever else built a bridge to Rivera and Wetteland. They has a 1-0 lead until the malaria came out in the 8th inning on Carmona, and game 3 we came back and smacked 'em good, but you can't expect to do that every night against a good team like cleveland, and when Wang and moose put you down 6-1, and then you go 1 for 13 with men in scoring position, forget it. Sometimes you come back, but more often than not you don't. Lots of homegrown Yanksees are on the rise, and if george wants to spend some money so be it, but it's not the only way the team was constructed. If you want a list of guys from the farm system and not free agency during the 90's, I can get one for you.
Good luck against the Indians, should be a good series across the board, and i'll be watching even though my team is out. At least the Mets collapsed, that brought a small smirk to my face.

Nah, the money issue is old and boring news. I do like the direction the Yanks took this year with the incorporation of rookies. It takes a chemistry, like Cleveland showed. Not that they were sensational, but they eeked it out and found a way to win, and thats all it takes. Sizemore did a good job, Lofton did a good job, when it counted. We didn't.

To use the money issue as an excuse against the Yanks would be the same as Toronto, who has a lesser payroll than the Sox, blame the Sox for spending too much money. Who cares what Toronto says. Would you care?

I think a little clearing of the house in NY, especially in the middle relief dept, is gonna help. We'll be ok. I'm up in the air about the Torre issue. How do you replace Torre? Who's gonna fill those shoes..... . We had a great run in the 2nd half of the season and the Sox nearly imploded, but, we did make it there. Maybe a shakeup in the managerial position might be a good thing, maybe not. I want Torre to stay, but if he doesn't, then we move on.
Simple as that. His replacement better not be Don Mattingly....:ROTF: . Don was a great hitter for us, but I think he's a bad luck omen all around. Bobbie V might shake things up a little. He'd be my best candidate. Maybe Tony LaRussa. Not Girardi. Maybe Joe will hang on to the job and I hope thats the case.

Remember the Sox finished in 3rd place last year and for the amount they payed their players, I couldv'e used that as an excuse for throwing their team chemistry off, but the people didn't perform. Beckett stunk for the amount they were paying him, that hothead guy you got from the Cards, can't remember his name, stunk and thats what sank the Sox last year. We could blame it on injuries, but our first half this year, was plagued with injuries too and we managed to scrap our way back.

So, with that being said, good luck to all teams. My pick would have to be Colorado, and only because they're riding a wave. That seems to be the trend in the 2000 era, with the wild card team winning the WS.

Oh yeah Tommy. I did get a snicker when the Mets were teed up and punted on the last day...... I have a lot of Mets fans around here I got to rib them, but my phone was ringing off the hook after Cleveland beat us....... .

The huge payroll doesnt guarantee a Championship but it does pretty much ensure a trip to the playoffs whereas other teams get good, lose their players to the Yanks, Sox, Dodgers etc. and then have to start over again.
