  • Cigar smokers: need suggestions

I have recently begun to enjoy cigars. Can you give me suggestions on the type of humidor, lighter, cutter, etc that would be the best for me? I only smoke maybe one cigar every other week, so I don't need any fancy/expensive accessories. Also, what are some of your favorite cigars? Thanks in advance.

I really like the Al Capone Rum cigarellos. Not really a cigar, but it's more PC than a cigarette I guess. Smoke it up!!!!!

If you aren't smoking regularly, you can get a $1 plastic cigar cutter from a liquor store that will work just fine. Don't bother with cigar knives or pins or anything like that.

Lighting implements, however, are more important. Unless you have a (butane) lighter meant specifically for the lighting of cigars (Davidoff sells some nice ones), I do not recommend using one as it is said that the naptha and Zippo type lighters negatively affect the taste of the cigar. In fact I never recommend the use of lighters at all. Most true cigar aficionados will suggest cigar matches. They're about twice the length of a regular match, allowing you to still have plenty of time to light your cigar once the match head has burned away.

Since you're not smoking regularly, I'd suggest spending a little more on your cigars so you have a more enjoyable experience when you do decide to light up. Davidoff makes some outstanding ones (I prefer the Davidoff 2000), as does Zino (the Platinum and Scepter lines). Ashton also makes very good cigars, I highly recommend the VSG series.

Of course it's all personal preference. The best part about smoking cigars casually is trying out new ones. But remember, you get what you pay for.

El Rey Delmundo are good as well as Padrons. If you like Fuentes but want to save some money try Monecinos. They are a Fuente cigar that are usually lower cost. Humidors are a hard call. You only need one if you are going to store a number of cigars. I have a small one that will hold about ten cigars and a larger that can hold upwards of 40 but I never use it. I would strongly recommend a bullet cutter and I prefer matches for lighting.

Well, if want to enjoy lighting up, might I suggest a vintage Ronson table lighter. They are almost as big as your fist. Mine is a "Queen Anne". And they are hard to lose.:ROTF:

You dont want to use a naptha(sp?) fueled light although that one is very cool. The fumes from burning naptha make your cigars taste nastey.

I just lit mine and smelled it.:ROTF: And no, I didn't set fire to my Viking god-like facial hair. But, he may be right. It does smell like kerosene. :ROTF: But matches smell as well. Butane?

Aside from smoking cigars I have always liked the way a Zippo smelled when lit. It reminds me of my dads brother.

I just fueled up my Zippo. Yeah, it does bring back memories. I'll go with a Zippo for cigars.:ROTF:

Thanks for all the suggestions! I have a few of my Dad's old Zippo's. Maybe I'll try one out this weekend.

Do us non-smokers a favor and find a different hobby/habit.

I spent 20 years living with both parents that smoked 2 packs a day each. I should be dead by now on the secondhand smoke. I'm 57. And I smoke. I know, I'm an idiot. But, if a person wants to smoke a cigar or 3 let them be. BTW, I hate cigar smoke.:ROTF:
