And don't give me the old "you have a monopoloy" bullshit because you talking about how much you love Firefox, Linux, etc is essentially proof that we do not have a monopoly. You have choices and you're choosing something other than MS. Great, good for you. The market is working.

But a lot of people/companies buy our software because it fills a need and it seems to work just fine for them.

I really struggle to keep my mouth shut and not get defensive on threads like these, but for me MS has been a great place to work for 11 years now. It has fed my kids and allowed me to purchase a few Jacksons over the years. So you'll have to forgive me if I get a little fired up when the random "Micrsoft sucks at everything they do" comments come flying because I can't help but take it personally.

Do we suck at some things? Yes of course, no doubt about it.

I'm the first one to yell and scream when we do stupid shit, and like most big companies, we do a lot of it. But for all our past fuck-ups, we also have some killer products - SharePoint, SQL Server, XBox Live, etc.

So back on topic, I occasionally use Firefox on my home systems and I like it just fine. It has that single-click "get rid of all my porn surfing history" feature which is really nice.

What do you do at MS, if you don't mind my asking? I am a strong proponent of Visual Studio; I use 2005, and it's simply the greatest thing I've ever got with an MS logo on it. I've been pushing for a switch from Borland to VS2005 (at least, preferably 2008 when it comes out) within my own company since I got here.

I also use and develop for (on my own time) MSFS.

I prefer Linux systems to Windows; however as a Windows developer, it's difficult to switch exclusively to a Linux distro.

One of the best "customer service" phone call experiences I've ever had was with MS.

I don't think MS sucks in it's entirety; but I do think their OS track record is pretty spotty. Windows 3.1 (run on DOS) and Windows XP are two Windows OSes I've never had problems with. I think they tend to be, not wasteful so much, as less frugal with the system resources at their disposal. But overall, they put out relatively high quality (if expensive) software and OSes.

Tim, at this point in time, you are right - I have no idea what MS is up to. I have been in computers since 300 baud modems were cutting edge - which doesn't mean a hell of a lot, but I'm not a complete newb. This idea isn't a secret, and has not been unique to MS. My understanding is those practices are a thing of the past that phased out around the time MS faced massive anti-trust lawsuits all over the world. So there it is, a historical dispute between skeptical people on the outside that is categorically denied by people on the inside.
I don't know what they put in that company Kool-Aid, but I'm sure this dude had a lot of it that day...

I have no idea, but my guess would be he's an executive in Redmond.

No matter what browser you use most of what you get through them is junk. Some just show it to you quicker than others.
