  • Comcast Internet/TV

A coworker told me how he pays for only Comcast Internet
but splits the the cable before the modem and ran
it to his TV to get Free TV. (The Cable installer told him how to do it)
I tried this on my small CRT tv in my computer room and it worked.
Maybe because I pay for both?
I was just woundering if you
only pay for the internet can they filter out the TV part?
I think he just gets the basic cable stuff.
    Is this wrong?

I think you can get free cable just about anywhere now. When my cable was turned off, it was just the box that wouldn't work. If I went straight to the wall I got all the basic cable channels. When my buddy moved into his apartment it worked the same way.

Most of the time if you cancel cable they come out and unhook the connector up on the poll and put a seal on it.

Guess that's an advantage of living in an apartment. Cox is probably too lazy to come out every time someone moves out.

My understanding is that you don't need a cable box for Comcast basic service if you have a digital tv, just plug the cable right in the back of the tv. Not exactly an answer to your question, but a comcast tidbit none the less

Lets just say I hope no cable guys are reading this LOL!

Technically, the cable company would call this piracy and try to through you in jail (maybe not that harsh)

I do that in my bedroom... split the cable before the internet modem and right to the TV. I only do get the basic channels, though, because there's no cable box in the equation.

When the Comcast guy came out to disconnect the cable from my future Summer Home at the box in the common backyard, he said; "Just get a splitter and run a line from your trailer. I don't give a shit. " So, I guess I could have free cable and with a modem, free internet in the Summer Home.:ROTF:

That is until the Comcast guy is about to loose his job from lost revenue, and he remembers this Viking dude in a trailer full of guitars....

All I'm saying is be sneaky people. I hate the F'ing cable company - they are the pirates. I use Direct TV, but it's not much better.

It's definitely not legal if you're receiving services you didn't pay for.

With that said, I would have thought the TV and the Internet would be on different bandwidths and they could limit it pretty easily. I do know that for Internet access you have to call them and tell them your modem's MAC ID or else it won't work. For TV I know some people who paid for basic but could still get some of the "standard" package channels. With my digital-tuner-equipped TV I can get some of the digital only channels without a box, but this is only if Comcast is sending them down the line unencrypted. If they're encrypted I can't get them without a Comcast cable box.

edit: This could explain why the price for Internet + basic is practically the same as the price for just Internet.

It is wrong because now its actually more expensive to only have cable internet without basic with Comcast. I think its part of the deal. If you are not getting basic with your internet you could be paying 5 dollars more than if you had basic.

Call comcast and double check these rates last I checked this was true.

I can't do it. Not since 1977. The group Foster Home I helped run helped themselves to free cable. Some bozo climbed the telephone pole and tapped into the cable. There was only one clue that it wasn't a legal line. These bananas spliced together 50 feet of lamp cord right to the house.

I at one time in college hacked some DTV cards with my dorm mate and we got all the channels for about 48 hours then the cards stopped working and the people that owned the cards were pissed at us since they had to order new ones from direct TV and they were charged around 40 bucks for each one.

Just my TV hacking experience, never ran a descrammbler box but a few friends had those back in the day.

There may be a problem with the speed of the internet access or it not working at all. It really should be on its own line and not split. Cable running to a TV can be split without a problem to other TVs, but internet modems get a stronger signal if they're on their own separate line.
