Or in other words, it's a symbol of the USSR and we all know how that turned out.

It is a phase many seem to go through until they mature and become more knowledgeable. It probably has something to do with getting laid by certain types of college chicks. Later, they will look back with some embarrassment and thank their lucky stars they actually live in a totally different kind of society that tolerates that kind of behavior and afforded them a consequence free environment to act out their angst.
Oh yes, I've been waiting all my life for someone to realize that about me. How drastically sorry my girlfriend of 3 years will find it that I slept with weird collage chicks, and was the kind of person who goes though clicky phases.

This is the exact reason why I like having it as my avatar, it allows for great conversation, no? I've been a liberal ever since I was 7-8 years old, and the conservatives have always made me chuckle. Really fun to piss 'em off too.

Well, last century there was this great experiment in political, social and economic organization carried out on more than half the world's population that immediately turned into a nightmare of suffering and repression, mass starvation, and inhuman cruelty on a scale never seen before in human history.
I'm guessing you haven't read the Communist Manifesto. Or realized that your country nuked Japan. Yeah, those two things are about as related as the corrupt leaders of the USSR and what true Marxism is.

I'd also be interested on your statical information on how more then half the world was suffering because of communism... also, last time I checked, it wasn't an immediate failure either. Hell, last time I checked, their going back to capitalism was a failure.

Aside from economic factors, the change from pro-family values of the socialist community to individualist and materialist values characteristic of capitalist societies seems to have accelerated the disintegration of the traditional family. Not a negligible factor is the siphoning of females in their reproductive years into the sex industry. Prostitution, virtually nonexistent during the years of socialism, grows at an unprecedented rate. […] Thousands of young women disappeared into the brothels of Germany, Italy and Turkey, the favored destinations.” (Krus et al., 1997, p. 749).
Also, remember how these dirty scum helped save our asses in the war. Oh wait, right... facts aren't real. They took a real beating, and while the EU/NA countries had somewhat better military tactics (resulting in less casualties), the Soviets are highly responsible for demoralizing the Nazi invasion's northwards, to which they put a supreme amount of effort.

Now, I know we'll all agree on how their humanitarian rights had some less then... well, lets just say they fucking sucked. That still doesn't mean you're suffering. Take a quick glance though 1984, or a better example in Brave New World everyone seems happy, except the reader, and the protagonists.

In hammer and sickle land, they would have been shot or sent to a concentration camp to be worked and starved to death.
Oh, you mean like how unions work? Or... wait a minute, McCarthyism anyone? While you might not have been worked to death, your life and reputation were ruined... oh but wait, that's long term suffering, not short term, like being shot.

Honestly now, crawl out of your right-wing gutter, and look at the world with bigger eyes. Fuck, to tell you the truth I would hate living in a pure communistic state, but it has its benefits and it's negatives. Same with capitalism. Still, the hammer and sickle represent to me a paradoxical twist for freedom of expression that you obviously do not understand.

Let us all curse our natural human education, as it obviously has left some everlasting scars of moral outrage to something so trivial as as 60px squared piece of digital data.

So, anymore right wing complaints? I think I'll have to grab some popcorn! :ROTF:

If you have to suffer to explain yourself, then there is a big problem with your ideaology, IMHO. My beliefs can be written on a matchbook cover.
        Let the people decide.
The far extremes of ideaology always have an interest at stake other than the professed goals. Arguments get forced into far corners, causing factions to debate points that were not even part of the original intent of the ideaology. So, in our system, I urge people to pay the most attention to local politics, and elections, and then work up from there if they so desire. The biggest problems seem to appear when mandates come from Federal government, as the solutions that work in one place will not necessarily work in another. So we live in a republic, and not in a direct democracy. The representatives that have the most direct impact on my daily life live near me, are accessable, and that voice carries upwards through the chain. It isn't perfect by any means, but I call myself a conservative because I have gained an inherent distrust of those that have gained the most power, and have risen to the top.
So, no complaints, I understand what you are saying. When I was younger and much more rebellious, I would do things like that, just to stand out from the sheep. When I grew up, and made my own path, then I realised what a great place this is, for all of its flaws.

Nope. Simply a lesson in how self interest in socialism is not acceptable.

You can try to make it more complex by using big words, but as with everything it really boils down to something real simple.

In a socialist economy, you wouldn't have a computer to type on, or electricty to use a computer, etc. I'm talking about the ultimate end result, not the pipe dreams of Marx, Mao, Stalin, etc.

The loss for incentive to work drags civilization into the cave again.

You'll find as you get older that self interest is not something to feel guilty about. It's something that is very real and noble as the results are fantastic.

Regardless of the politics, current foreign involvement and other issues that the current American political system creates, there is no denying that the United States is the best place to live on earth. This wasn't done under a socialist philosophy. This was done in a capatalistic philosophy.

BTW, non US Citizens are not protected by our constitution. So we don't need to let you have freedom of speech.
