Why external PSU's?

I can't understand why recording gear companies design gear with external PSU's. These things seem like an inconvenience. Products with built-in PSU's and IEC inlets are much better IMO, especially when you want to use a power distribution rackmount unit. Is there any particular reason why certain products have to have external PSU's?

Yes and not only in theory. Biggest problem is the power transformer. Especially if you have gear with signal transformers as those can get easily affected by the electromagnetic interference of the power transformer. That's why the signal transformers should be away as much as possible from the power transformer. And even better is the use of a toroidal power transformer. And best (noise-wise) is to have the power transformer outside the case.

I did some tests in one of the units i builded and i could certainly increase the hum by placing the power transformer closer to the signal transformers.

Oh and another advantage is that often those external psu's are able to power more than one unit so need only one psu section which keeps costs down.

But i also agree that its really inconvient to have all those psus laying around.

Plus the fact it's easier to get your product CE marked when jumping through the hoops for the regs people if you use SLV transformers.

I like my power distribution unit. It's tidy (got lamps, got USB gooseneck light, it's rackmount) and doesn't look goofy like that vertical standing 10-way extension board. And being as the latter only has a poxy 2m mains cable and can't be sat horizontally, it will only gather dust.

Aside from the noise issue, there's also the heat issue. Some of those power bricks give off a lot. Would you rather have an external supply or a noisy fan?
