Like all popular forms of music, Rap was fine until it got popular. The early Sugar Hill Gang and Grand Master Flash stuff is really great. They played instruments, they sang, and they had some great lyrics.
There are many examples of this pattern in pop music. Look at the 80's metal that so many here hold near and dear - by the end of that there was very little in the way of talent actually being utilized. And let's not forget that one of the least capable musicians in modern history took down the 80's in one punch (that'd be Kurt Cobain for you slow kids). Modern popular rap sucks just like 97% of the other popular music.
As for rap, dig deeper - there is more to it than what you white boys see on the shelves at Walmart (here's a hint - if it's being sold at Walmart it sucks) .I want REAL change. I want dead bodies littering the capitol.

When NWA says "Kill Whitey", they're talkin 'bout me
Seriously, Rapper's Delight is still the only rap song I can stand. I had the 12" single back then, too, and learned every word of it.
I also enjoyed EnVogue's "Free Your Mind". I don't know if the instruments were sampled, but I liked the lyrics, the riff, and the groove.
However, I did not care for ToneLoc and his ripping off Van Halen because he was too stupid or lazy to learn how to play much less come up with his own riffs.
Sampling other people's stuff to use in your own "song" is definitely not ok. It's robbery: "I'm too stupid and lazy to learn how to play anything from Chopin, so I'm going to sample it and string some words over it and call it music like I worked for it".
There's a band called Lifeseeker who have a song featured in the Dead Rising video game, and the kids on the game forum are going nuts over it. It's some sort of Beastie Boys wannabe thing with the chorus riff to Rush's 'Passage To Bangkok' sampled into it. I don't care if Rush approved it, it's retarded.
And if it takes any amount of skill to trim a sample correctly, I must be destined for it, because I've never found it difficult, even with a simple delay pedal. Maybe I'm a natural God at it, or maybe it just doesn't take as much talent as you think.
Vocalizing about how hard life is in da hood while you're making enough money doing it to drive an Escalade but still living in da hood is absolutely retarded.
"This place sucks, and I'll probably die here, but it's my home and I ain't leaving". Seriously, you know how stupid that sounds? New Orleans sucked in 1989, and I split. The house I grew up in burned to the ground about a year or so later. Do I care? Hell no. Home is wherever my stuff is, whether it's Tennessee or Tina Turner's ass.I want to depart this world the same way I arrived; screaming and covered in someone else's blood
