My comment earlier about tipping in coins usually is because I am so upset with the server. I never blame the waiter for the cooks. I should not have to go into a kitchen myself to get silverware or refills. I have bartented before so I know what the receiving side of tips are like.

I've had 2 bad experiences where I didn't leave a tip at ALL, and complained to the manager and to the corporate office. Both times it was that bad.
I've also tipped extra for great service, and also complimented them to the manager and the corporate office. Folks shouldn't only hear the bad, give the props to the good/great ones!!

The place is super busy and the cooks in the kitchen can't keep up. Waiting forever to be seated or, once seated, to get your meal usually isn't the waiter/waitress's fault - it's the kitchen's. In those types of situations, IMHO it's not fair to ding the server's tip. They're doing the best that they can in a bad situation.
2. most times you cannot correctly diagnose why a server is performing poorly or absent for long stretches. you cannot take their word for why that is because the running joke amongst servers everywhere is to blame everything on the kitchen.the guitar players look damaged - they've been outcasts all their lives

But it's much better, now.
I may be biased, but I've noticed that generally, waiters give more attentive, focused, and less intrusive service than many waitresses. One thing that bugs me is a server who comes by to ask if everything is ok, when I have a mouthful of food, too often.

I'll give 15- 20%, sometimes a little more. If I get crappy service, it's anywhere below that.
For a good movie about restaurants, you should check out Waiting. It's funny as shit. Don't fuck with the people that make your food! :ROTF:I feel my soul go cold... only the dead are smiling.

Whoa, you guys are nuts... I know at almost all of the restaurants here, the servers make atleast minimum wage (8 something... I think) -> 10.50+. With tips, it's insane.
My roommate works at Timmies, he comes back with >$20 a shift. I worked a shift serving coffee on Christmas once, and made $70 in just acouple hours.
I usually tip 10% if it's good service. Not many places here split the tips, so one waitress working 10 tables in an hour picks up an easy $20.

I found that once I stopped going to popular / chain restaurants and went for the small, family owned & run businesses the quality of service and quality of food improved considerably. My girlfriend is vegan and the specialty vegan places are amazing - great food, great service, people genuinely passionate about the food their making.
Also, Freyr, it is quite different in the US. Most states have a "Minimum Wage" and a "Server's Minimum Wage" and the server's minimum wage is considerably less than the state's minimum wage. This takes into account the server's tips and counts them towards their wage - so they have to even declare how much they're making in tips too so they can be taxed on it.

Does anyone have long hair? Tattoos? Skull rings? Heavy metal shirt? Some people get really weird when they see that stuff. It's fucked up if you get a waiter or waitress like that. Not much you can do in that situation unless they say something about it. I look pretty plain these days, but I’ve been through that a lot. Some people are just weird and that’s all there is to it.
On the other hand, I almost always over tip. Waiters and waitresses are doing a job I could never do because I am way too intolerant of other peoples bullshit, and I’d probably end up breaking a plate over someone’s fucking head. I have a tremendous amount of respect for anyone who is serving me as long as they are not purposely being rude, and if they are screwing up it might be because they are just forgetful or not too bright. Some people can’t help that they make a lot of mistakes, and waitressing is one of the only jobs where an unskilled person who needs money can make a descent living. It takes a lot of guts to go to work everyday knowing that your going to put up with someone’s stupid bullshit sooner or later, so I always over tip, and if the service is really that bad I'd just go somewhere else.
Word to the wise people. Don’t get cocky with your food server. Young and overstressed people may take out their frustrations on the food that goes into your mouth and stomach. Hey! There’s an idea for a thread topic. Kinda makes you feel like eating at home.Last edited by excon; 11-28-2007, 08:48 AM.
