Man, it's so hard to believe it was three years ago today that Dime passed away! That's a day I doubt many of us will ever forget. Just wanted to say RIP, and I'll always remember him like this...

forgive this response, and i don't mean it disrespectfully, or in a horrible way - dime was cool, but enough of the sentimentalism already? its bad enuff with dean sticking dime on everything and anything. he was just another guitarist, a good one, but just another guitarsist. yes, he was a nice guy, does that make him special?...shit happens to lots of nice people. and i doubt any people here knew him, they just listened to his records, and i consequently fail to see the personal connection people seem to feel so strongly with him. its like they're mourning their wife or mother or something.... less people mourned when george harrison died or john lennon, or elvis, or chuck schuldiner, chris oliva, cliff burton, hendrix etc...and arguably they made a far greater contribution to music than dime ever did. what makes dime so special that everyone is always publicly mourning him? it annoys me all these guitarists who cropped up having been out of the scene for years and stuff and they're all talking about him like they knew him in magazines all of a sudden and got stickers of him everywhere and stuff, and people chanting his name whenever he's mentioned at gigs... i mean come on. it was sad, and was shocking how it happened, but all this idolising and worship is getting beyond cheesy now for me.Last edited by sonicsamurai; 12-08-2007, 03:31 PM.

Samurai, I get what you're saying to some extent, but today is the day he died. I was thinking about him & posted, that's all.
I agree with you that the marketing part of it sucks, but fewer people mourned Elvis or Lennon?? How about FedExing me some of what you've been smoking, dude!
Anyway, back on topic (hopefully)...

yeah i know, i appreciate its sad, hell i was shocked and wearing a pantera shirt on the day i found out, but its becoming a bit sickeningly overhyped for me now. he's just everywhere constantly and its just like, yes kerrang, yes metal hammer, (insert generic popular metal mag here) we get the point it was sad, some people new him and they were upset. its sorta getting to the point where they're flogging a dead horse a bit (no pun) essentially. just let the guy rest... wheres the randy rhoads double spread and sentire issue dedication because he died every year? hendrix doesn't get a full spread on his anniversary etc. and yet magazines are so desperately hyping dimebag. just let him rest...Last edited by sonicsamurai; 12-08-2007, 03:56 PM.

This guy laid down his life for metal in an honorable way that didn't involve slowly poisoning or shooting himself. RIP_________________________________________________

RIP Dime - I saw you play with Pantera on the VGOP tour and on the reunion tour with Morbid Angel and Slayer. You blew my mind every time. Thanks for your part in making metal groove again.
Sonicsamurai: I agree with your sentiments about the marketing blitz and general exploitation of a dead guy. Some of the money will hopefully make its way to the family that he loved and supported. It is only 3 years later, however and unlike many of your comparisons, he was murdered. He's a huge symbol of one of our greatest national problems: crazies with guns. Wherever you stand on that politically, it's something we have to think about and work against.
RIP

People mourn Dime for a few reasons IMO - 1) the way he was murdered, on stage doing what he loved 2) the fact he always came across as such a nice genuine guy with a real love of life - not some guy who did himself in on drugs or cheeseburgers, or a moaning whiner who always felt sorry for himself. A normal, fun loving guy who normal guys like us feel a connection with and 3) he was a fucking phenomenal guitar player. His soloing is to my mind every bit as crazy as the shit EVH pulled off in the late 70's. I don't think anyone before or since has played the same as Dime - and he did it all with a smile on his face. Even the shit Pantera did before "Cowboys" is good thanks to Dime.
I don't mind magazines like Kerrang and Metal Hammer jumping on the sympathy bandwagon but maybe that's cos I stopped reading those fucking pop magazines years ago when they claimed "St Anger" was a masterpiece. :ROTF: You need to buy Terrorizer instead mate. And Classic Rock.
