I will pass on Vista, XP does all I need it to do and that is enough for me. I just checked the runtime on my laptop, and I have not restarted it clean for two months, twelve days and just over thirteen hours. Crashes? Nope. If you have good hardware, XP will chug along just fine. At idle on this laptop, XP uses 0 to 2% cpu and 193 megs of RAM. On my main system, I have all kinds of TSR's loaded at idle, and I am at 1 to 3% cpu load and 371 megs out of the two gigs I have installed. Gaming performance on my main system rocks, and I can edit and compile videos all day long without a problem. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. DX10? Don't need it.

My sis and her husband buy only Dell systems, and they got Vista on their latest system. That lasted about two weeks before they tossed Vista and went back to XP Pro. She was all hyped up about it, but in the end they both found they could do without it. C-Net user ratings for Vista are 4.9 out of 10, not exactly glowing praise for it.

thetroy, it sounds like the stylus would be great for math equations so it sounds like you got exactly what you wanted in a laptop. My handwriting is so bad even my pharmacist can't read it. If I tried to use one, the computer would just give up and commit suicide.

Yeah, well that's Vista, with only UAC disabled. No tweaks or modifications. Everything else is stock. I could shave another 900mb off the RAM usage just by turning precaching off, but I bought Vista because it actually uses unused memory to improve performance.

When I only had 2g of memory, it used a little under 1 gig. When I added the extra 2 gigs, memory usage went up to where it is and everything seemed to have more "jump".

I know it's not for everyone, and I hated it at first, but after a week or so of playing with it I got used to the changes and now I can't do without it.

My little toy... I was still running XP when I took this picture... lol

Vista is more stable, much more secure... BSOD's are much less common with XP and things that would crash and corrupt an XP installation are much more stable with Vista x64. Vista changed heap access and fragmentation. No more XP like crashes from too many programs allocating too much memory and poor memory management.

Security? You can encrypt a whole drive with Bitlocker, and SP1 will give you the ability to keep the key on a USB pen drive.

Viruses? Traditional Windows viruses don't infect Vista. Things that run in kernel mode need signed drivers and are prevented from installation. That prevents most malware and rootkit software from even installing.

Speed? Vista is slower at gaming and performance benchmarks... however SuperFetch does improve system response times over XP by precaching your most used applications to main memory so they do not have to load. Sure, this means it uses more RAM. However it's RAM that you did not use before, and in case you did need it, Vista would release it if needed.

XP was a step down from Win2K. Vista x64 is a step back up.

Sure, you don't like it, but you're full of shit. I hate to see uninformed people bash something when they have no grasp of reality.

You couldn't pay me enough to go back to crappy XP. Vista Ultimate x64 FTW!
You obviously know more about it than me. I am full of shit and have no grasp of reality, just as you stated. Thank you for helping me realize that.

Dual monitor setups are great. I had a pair with my desktop awhile ago when I spent even more time on the computer but since I quit gaming and one of the monitors died I've been back to a single display.

Vista is a resource pig, but it can be tweaked. If you run it in Classic mode and turn of the fancy glass effect you'll notice a major improvement in speed. Or else get a super kick ass video card and you'll be good. It's those damn graphics!

I just bought a new desktop which came preloaded with Vista and it's taken me a few days, but I've got it running like a fucking champ now.

Yeah, the transition from XP to Vista is not painless like it was from Win 98/W2K to XP. A lot of stuff to relearn, but once you're spent a decent amount of time becoming familiar with it you realize that it is a better OS.

Oh, and another reason people hate it so much, when you first start using Vista, it's indexing in the background, and precaching has not figured out what you like to run, so there are extra processes that take extra resources until it's familiar with your usage.

In 2009, Windows 7 or Windows Vienna is going to be a minor revision of Vista and will drop backwards compatibility with Win95/98/Win2k/WinXP and will only run Vista software.
