  • The new Soilwork album - Sworn to a Great Divide

I wasn't a big fan of Soilwork until I heard Stabbing the Drama, one of my all time fav. albums.

I've been really busy and found out that they released another album just yesterday. Sworn to a Great Divide. I listened to the album 2-3 times and I have to say I like it a lot! Really melodic and modern. Has that industrial vibe in some songs. Their vocalist Strid is improving himself on every record, his singing on this one is unbeatable! I like the way the band is heading. I like some of their early work also but not as much as the newer stuff.

This album is a little bit more guitar oriented than their former one Stabbing the Drama but I can't say I like the riffage that much. The choruses and the melodies do it for me in this album. The bonus track Martyr is incredible!

From what I've read on the net I can say there are many people out there who think this album is just a commercial mediocre sounding effort by Soilwork. I can see it's not like the earlier stuff but the music in the last 2 albums is undeniably high quality imo! So I'd like to hear your opinion if you've heard it

BTW about the production of this album; I can say the guitar sound is surprisingly bad, especially after that great tone on the Stabbing the Drama album. The vocals were recorded/produced by Devin Townsend I find the overall production quite pleasant

I've been listening to this quite a bit lately. There are some really good guitar bits on there, but the star of the show is obviously Strid's vocals. So strange that they produced them separately in Vancouver. The DevLab video is as interesting as it is humorous. Strid showed up there without lyrics for some of the songs, most notably "Martyr."

And I don't claim to know one way or the other, but while Strid is credited with "all vocals," there are many parts of this record that sound an awful lot like Devin singing. Which, if it's really Strid singing, is a high compliment from me.

It didn't grab me at first..but now I LOVE IT!!!

I've listened to it like nuts..to the point when my wife told me to burn her a copy for the car..now she loves it!

Lots of hooks and great playing..it takes a few spins before the hooks dug in, but when they do..it's nice!

Oh, I got the shirt too..it came with the CD from CM distro when it was released.

Yes,,I've watched the DVD several times..Dev/Strid are silly fuckers.

Strid can play geetar, great voice..he plays bass in Terror 2000.

Dev had a huge impact on Darkane as well..

I'll have to check out those two bands. Thanks for mentioning them.

Strange there's been no talk on here of Devin's last project, Ziltoid the Ominiscient. Pretty hilarious stuff, while being well played and often super-heavy at the same time. Then super-light on a couple tracks, which is shocking. But he uses computer drums. Not too bad, but there are several spots where is extremely noticeable. All I could think every time a little glitch came through was, "Fuck, man. Hoglan could'a played that shhit FOR REAL."

I have a difficult time with all the numerous Pantera-ish bands that mix aggressive singing with emo vocals. They all lack the things that made Pantera such a kickass band; interesting and dynamic guitar work, and a skillful singer. It doesn't grab me. Soilwork undoubtedly have some skilled guitarists, but only the rhythms come through. The leads drown in the music. I remember liking Chainheart Machine a bit. Then I listened to Stabbing the Drama, but the emo choruses just ruin it for me. Maybe I didn't give it a fair chance, but...hell, they sound the same as two dozens other bands do these days.

I think Soilwork's singer is rather skillful and having leads or not doesn't matter imo, it's just music good or bad

+1. Also about the emo vocals, I prefer it to cookie monster vocals. I cant stand to listen to many great bands due to these vocals. I ordered the CD a week ago btw cant wait to have it.

I agree with the statement, but I disagree witht he categorization of Soilwork as that. I consider them to be closer to prog metal and would lump them in with Royal Hunt, Spock's Beard, etc. But maybe they could be considered a crossover between the two.

That's the title of their next one.

I assume it's something lost in the translation to English. Like "Soilwork" is a literal translation of a word that would more closely be grave-digging.

I just saw on Blabbermouth that Ola Frenning has left Soilwork. The notion of this continuing to be a band is right up there with Korn, having two original members and three touring guys. I loved Chainheart-era Soilwork, but the creative forces have left the building.

I used to like SW, but the latest one didn't cut it for me.
I feel festive all year round. Deal with it.

I always felt Soilwork was more rooted in the Death Metal side of things and they added clean vocals and more melodic choruses to that... as opposed to being an "Emo" band. That being said, I liked Natural Born Chaos and Predator's Portrait. Couldn't really get into the next two (Figure Number 5 and Stabbing the Drama). Sworn to a Great Divide is a definite improvement on the last two for me.
