Whilst I don't condone ripping off artists/producers etc., it's no big secret that lots of people use these. In my case, it's to find deleted things that are not obtainable in shops like 90's songs originally released through labels who went bust and never passed their publication rights onto another company. My purpose for writing this thread is that I want to know which programs you can use without getting fucked over by viruses and spyware. Having just bought a new PC (the motherboard on my much loved Dell machine crapped out and no-one makes desktop machines or even desktop cases anymore), it has one of these dual core processors which apparently doesn't like certain shareware programs. I've tried Limewire (the worst virus ridden POS I've ever used), Shareaza and Bittorrent. The latter two worked fine on my Dell, but they both seriously fucked up my Dad's machine which (possibly by coincidence) has a dual core processor.

Perhaps it was all those German Champagne and Caviar or K9 movies you downloaded.
The answer is that NO program you just pick up is guaranteed to be free of spyware or viruses. Indeed, even "respectable" software corporations can't be trusted not to slip any little spying devices in, for "market research".
Just make sure you keep your AV/Firewall up to date, and run something like Ad-Aware and Spybot, and use your common sense when downloading stuff. Something promising a video of Britney Spears sucking off a horse* is plainly not coming from an honest source, so may be more likely to have hidden nasties.
And what do you mean no-one manufactures desktop cases anymore?
*Now, if it said "Great Dane"..........So I woke up,rolled over and who was lying next to me? Only Bonnie Langford!
I nearly broke her back

I like uTorrent. It's a very stable program and you can choose whee to search for torrents (mininova, piratebay, etc). WinMx is still working BUT you have to get the MxPie patch and use NapMx to get a list of servers available on the open nap protocol networks. It works quite well. Apparently lots of people are still into Soulseek too.THIS SPACE FOR RENT

What does any of this have to do with shareware? Shareware is a program that is available for free with limited functionality. To unlock full functionality, you must pay the publisher of said software. Famous shareware in the past was Doom, which was available for free on floppy disk at every major computer store when it came out. You could then print out an order form and send it to id Software to get the full version. The shareware only had the first episode (of five IIRC) unlocked.
Perhaps you meant to say bit torrent programs?
To address your post, the kind of processor has nothing to do with it. It's what malware-riddled files you download with it.Scott

"File sharing" - not Shareware.
I use Emule, though their servers were recently reconstructed due to the porn industry shutting them down.
I've gotten tons of stuff with it - most of which led to seeking out a buyable product. I found a Les Paul/Mary Ford boxed set on there and then found one for sale brand new on Amazon.
However, as was said, nothing's 100% safe, and I've encountered numerous infected files, but it's the nature of the internet - there's always some jerkoff who thinks it's funny (and somehow their "right") to upload a virus/worm.I want to depart this world the same way I arrived; screaming and covered in someone else's blood

Yeah, I was confused over the shareware part... but yeah, micro torrent (µTorrent) is where it's at. isohunt and demonoid are your best bets, but just be a smart downloader.
I don't pirate anything anymore though, the only stuff I torrent now are linux distro's, hehe. I collect CD's, and any expensive software I need, my work buys me, or I can get from my Uni

uTorrent really is micro torrent? Never knew that.
But to answer the question, I have a dual core proc here and uTorrent runs just fine. I've never had a problem at mininova with viruses. Also, dimeadozen.org is really sweet for finding live, unreleased recordings.
