  • I lost my grandfather yesterday...

    > My beloved grandfather,Thomas Wilkerson, passed away yesterday. He had a series of mini-strokes along with a bad one back in July, and was battling dementia and early-onset Alzheimer's. He apparently knew for a while that his time was running out,and quit eating. The cause of death is said to be self-imposed malnutrition.

I don't remember him at all like that. I prefer to remember him as the indestructible version I remember as a kid. He was a Master Tool and Diemaker for Goodyear Aerospace in Akron, and is the only T+D man I've ever heard of that had high-level security clearance,as most of his work late in his career was on projects for Aerospace when they were still a leading defense contractor. I realize this isn't exactly a trait that would be considered desirable in today's PC climate, but he was something of a hard-ass,as well as the most racist man I've ever met.

Several years ago,my boss invited me to go deer hunting with him and some of his buddies, since I had never been. I called him up,an old military man,and asked him what he could tell me about deer hunting. "Well it's not a lot of fun really. I always had more fun hunting a MAN than I did anything with 4 legs and didn't shoot back. My advice is if you want to be a man and go deer hunting, get down on the ground with a baseball bat and GO FIND ONE!" I laughed and he asked me if I was really serious about going, and if I needed something to shoot, and I said yes. He sent me his HK-91,which is a semi-auto precision rifle more often used as a target/sniper rifle to go hunting with,so I'd know that if I got a clean shot at a deer, that if I missed,it was MY fault. I have no words to describe how I'll miss him. The funeral will probably be Wednesday or Thursday,so after tonight I'll be gone for the rest of the week. Thank you for your time,Tommy D.

That's a real shame Tommy, especially at this time of year. (Erm, not that it's any easier to deal with at any other time)
It sounds like he was a character, a real man, one who stuck to his guns and maintained his opinions no matter how unfashionable or un-PC they became.
Maybe one day you'll be the same kind of grandad, loved and respected by wide-eyed grandkids. I hope so.
So I woke up,rolled over and who was lying next to me? Only Bonnie Langford!

    I nearly broke her back

That's terrible, a loss of any family member is probably one of the cruelest things anyone could ever experience.

Good luck with everything dude, R.I.P.

My sympathies to you and your family. Losing a family member is never easy, but it always seems to hit harder during the holiday season.

Wow, that is horrible Tommy. Sounds as if the man was pretty damn wonderful. I glad you remember him the way you do. It's how I remember my Father and Grandfathers as well. Peace to you bro.

That's crushing, Tommy. My best goes out to you.
My own Dad is a toolmaker, and I apprenticed under him.
I have been in machining and designing my entire career,
and have never looked back in regret. So your Grandfather
holds a special place in my heart. And yeah, the best ones
I've known were a bit "gruff", but it was part of that unbending
character that can make the difference between good and great.
Godspeed to one of our own!
