I feel like it's easier for me to achieve different dynamics with the lighter strings. Now I play my strat with 8-38's and the scalloped board - it forces me to be very consistent and accurate to get the right pitch and volumes.
I've tried as big as 13's on my other strat and it's great for building hand strength but I don't like the feel or the tone.

I personally do not care how it was built as long as it is a good playing/sounding instrument.

Very cruddy ones, because I'm way too lazy to change them.
I use Slinky 10's because they're the only ones I don't break..and why I never change 'em."Bill, Smoke a Bowl and Crank Van Halen I, Life is better when I do that"
Donnie Swanstrom 01/25/06..miss ya!

D'Addario XL 110's for me. Play mainly 80's metal so i'm usually always in Eb.
I used Elixir 10's for a bit cos i got them when i bought a new axe, swapped them off for the good ol' XL's after a day. Not a fan of coated strings i must say.Stringed things:
Charvel Model 4
Charvel NOS Star
Gibson SG Special

Yngwie uses 8's, but his sets are hybrid: 8, 11, 14, 22, 32, 46
And interestingly enough, even with such light high strings, he tunes to Eb
