Hey, just wanted to pop back into this thread to say something I should've said earlier. I totally respect everybody's right to their own beliefs, and in no way did I mean to ridicule or belittle anybody's religion. I usually stay clear of political or religious threads for this reason. My own political & religious beliefs are a work in progress, and I'm sure they could be torn to shreds if somebody took the trouble. I've got friends of all stripes, and hope I didn't lose any here over what i posted earlier. Peace!
The perversion of the message by religious groups that have to perpetuate your subscription to their services is what JC was railing about the entire time leading up to his death, yet that message is lost on most Christians and Christian bashers as it was on Jewish folks 2000 years ago, whether you believe the story or not, that's what it was about.

Bollocks to that, if they are Christians they'll forgive you, right?
Fwopping, you know you want to!
VI VI VI: the editor of the Beast!
There are 10 kinds of people who understand binary. Those who do and those who don't.
For the sake of argument, I believe that the Great Spaghetti Monster begat his only meatball son to be devoured by ravenous humans so that I may one day rejoice in eternal life in heaven with all you can eat pasta. Refute that, sir.
finally! Something tangible upon which to hang our hopes for in the after life
What I can't understand is that the entire point of Christianity's teachings are as plain as day - tolerance, forgiveness, and a path to world peace - treat everyone fairly and if everyone does that, the world is peaceful.
All of the "biblical noise" that says you have to stand on your head every third friday or tattoo JC on your forehead is just that - noise and a distraction from a simple message.
Similar enlightenment comes from others like Ghandi, most buddhist teachings, even folks like MLK was a real 20th century person with all of his misdeeds and imperfections well documented, but he inspired many people to take a more productive approach to gaining peace and equality. If it does come to pass that Christianity falls out of favor for the next "blip" in historical religions, I just hope that the crazies that don't get it don't get to write the encyclopedia entry that describes the religion.
Organized religion is the problem, not "Christian teachings" - just to clarify. I don't know for a fact anything in the bible is historically correct, though it's immaterial to what I get out of it. I know that reading certain stories in the bible can inspire you to look at your situation differently and be a better person.

The teachings of JC are gold. Too bad that the vast majority of Christian leaders pervert that message. I'm an ex-Catholic...got sick of seeing the Vatican defend known pedophiles.
I also detest the blatant intolerance (anti-JC) demonstrated by so called Christians. And I hate the message about not having to "earn" your way into heaven...that all you have to do is believe that JC was the son of God who died for your sins and, poof, you are in heaven. These so-called Christians will tell me to my face that Charles Manson can go to heaven while my maternal grandparents (who were Buddhist) are suffering in hell. Well, fuck you 2 times! They also blow a head gasket when I ask them what happened to all the Native Americans who lived between the time JC died and America was discovered. Yes, basically, I detest the hardcore literal interpretation of "I am the way".
These fundamentalist Christians are so hypocritical it's sickening. They will nod approvingly when talking about freedom of religion in the U.S., but secretly they don't reveal the simple fact that they believe the practitioners of other religions are going to hell.
And what really is so unbelievably awe inspiring about suffering on the cross? Yes, I'm the first one to admit that I'm a pussy and couldn't do it, but there have been countless historical figures who have suffered and died in the same way that JC did. E.g., William Wallace of Scotland. Hell, John McCain was tortured and could have easily been executed, but he was willing to die for his country out of love.
Man ruined religion. The "teachings" are common sense and words to live by. Then real life got in the way. So the religions had to be molded to justify; rationalize; explain away; sanctify and otherwise make the "True Believers" better in the eyes of whomever. We are weak and will always look for the "Answer". Not me. And, believe it or not, I admire and respect people who have found religion. Now, if they could just get back to the basics.
I guess I'd rather be brainwashed then fucked in the ass. Scientology wins...
Or you could choose option C and tell all of them to F off.
Part of me wants to believe there is a god, but I know it's all BS and that humans are in denial of the fact that their existence is finite.
When my daughter asks me what happens when you die, I tell her the truth.
That I don't have a clue, and neither does anyone else.
For the record, I was raised a Catholic, yet I can't stand to be around 99.9% of the hypocrites.
