I remember when my sister started taking violin lessons when we were kids. It was her first instrument and wow, was that ever painful to listen to for the first several weeks.
There IS a comfortable way to hold the thing. The right way.
Unfortunately it seems like not even the pro's have agreed on a 'right way' from what I have read. Some people say to use a shoulder rest and not use your left hand at all while others say shoulder rests are for losers and you should use your left hand.
