France seems to be doing just fine to me...

IIRC, France has had severe problems recently with riots in the streets concerning treatment of immigrants (many Muslims), social spending, rioting over benefits being threatened, and Chirac and the oil for food fiasco involving Iraq.
Last I heard, Sarkozi <sp>, was a conservative, and has promised a near-freeze on social spending to bring the nation's economy back in line.
The wave of free market economy is coming back to Europe, albeit slowly.
The European nations are also getting wary of letting the European Union get too much power.
So, the US just as slowly drifts to government controlled economy, health care, higher taxation, the Europeans are exploring free market solutions.
There was a small revolution in France when Sarkozi was elected. The French decided they had had enough of an overbearing beuracracy deciding how to run their lives, I think. It's called Liberty.

France will always have riots because that's what their youth likes to do.
As far as immigrants goes, muslims aren't the problem, it's half of the Africa who goes there to find better life.
Sarkozy is as liberal as any other west european leader.
French will always be the world leaders in cooking and in beuracracy
The only ones who are worried about EU are small countries who have been members for little time. In south and west no one gives a rat's ass about EU's rules
When we compare France and US economy and enviorment then it's a lot easier to live in France than US right now.
