Peace, Love and Happieness and all that stuff...

I personally do not care how it was built as long as it is a good playing/sounding instrument.

I'm not going "cheerleader" or anything but (There's always a but huh?)

I grew up with 80's hair metal where all the guys looked like chicks, and since if I'm going to see something that looks female and the fact I'm not really into the penis thing, I'd rather it actually be female. So in a way I have a fetish (mild fetish) for female guitars (Who can actually play the damn things, not the three cords and pose all angry joan jett style) I to this day still have a crush on Janet Robin even if she's gone all bland and won't acknowledge her Precious Metal days. le sigh..

So I have a question, and I'm going to really generalize this. I don't think it's a stretch by any means to say that the majority of shredder guitarists are male. There are a handful of female shredders out there - i won't even limit it to shredder - there's a handful of woman out there who can really play their instrument, it's not all strumming e and g cords. But it doesn't seem like many never really became known as any sort of rock god on guitar. Jennifer B, uhm.. it's late so I'm drawing blanks I'm sure there were more.

I'm just curious and I am asking the lady's this question - is it a misguided perspective that ladys on guitar are more interested in melody then the EVH, RR, show off, million notes per minute thing? Or is it more a stigma that woman can't rock in that way so the music business doesn't put it out there?

The Nancy Willsons, and Jewels of the world are all good guitarists but not really awe inspiring. They are very solid at what they do, but I don't think they have ever done anything to knock people on their ass like EVH, Rhoads, Blackmore, etc. It much more melody then "Hey look at me I'm the lead guitarist"

it's real late, I hope this made sense.

I Really miss the bands Leather Angel, Precious Metal, Girlschool.
In the future though I need to remember to not buy guitars while on Nyquil

your question is good, but ur forgetting blues guitarists like srv or hendrix for example, who are not shredders per se, but are u gonna deny they were GODS?? blues guitarists qualify for guitar god-dom because of their feel and their incredible intensity. nothing to do with evh million note per second. like billy gibbons. a master of his art, amaxzing feel, great note choice, keeps it nice and simple, but a GOD nonetheless.

so shredder is not the only thing that qualifies as a guitar god.

and if women like you say are more about the feel, how come there are NO famous female blues guitarists. in fact i can't name any femake blues guitarists. jesssie may hempbill? what was she? the 50s? and i don't think she's that famous....did alert collins have that blonde girl playing with him for a bit? i can't remember...she was just a side guitarist i think...

Bonnie Raitt is an excellent blues slide guitarist, but her popular songs are more rock-pop than blues. She learned her stuff from John Hammond.

Bonnie Raitt, possibly one of the best blues guitarists out there regardless of gender.

And guys were the ones who started that whole "I can shred better than you" crap, just like with everything else. "Mine's bigger", blah blah blah. That crap killed Metal in the 80s along with the spandex and hairspray and makeup. Who cares if someone can play "a million notes a second"? How many of those notes matter? How many contribute to the song?

And it's NEVER about "hey look at me I'm the lead guitarist". Anyone with that attitude is a disgrace and an insult to real guitarists everywhere.

                              Newc nailed it.

i do think that women musicians in general are more interested in the feel and the melody of a song, at least i am.
noise, showboating, and general male machisimo isn't my bag... though i do REALLY get into my music. every musician that feels it, that has a zone, does.
my music is on the intricate side, and each instrument has it's place, but yes... the melody and the message and the FEEL are what are most important to me. that, and well played song.
i also think a song can be incredibly simple too, just acoustic, and it can knock your socks off. that is... if you can play the emotion. does that make sense?

honestly i think that you don't see so many guitar god women because of these two things:

                              1. we don't care. we already know we're goddesses and we don't need the adoration.
                              2. you tend to see more incredibly talented female singers than guitarists.

why there aren't more women guitarists/notable women guitarists? eh... i think its relative. maybe there are more out there than you know of, maybe not. it's not like we can't play as well as dudes, again.. relative.
women play differently, yes. of course we do! i think that every single person plays differently because we all have our own way of speaking through our music. it only stands to reason.

i haven't had muh morning coffee yet, and these are just some thoughts as i'm thinkin' them ... but that's what i've got so far.

i'm outta here for the weekend. be good.

One of the things that MTV taught us was when they decided to do an unplugged special. The idea that any song that can be played acoustically is good because it is bare, that's where true talent lies. All too often we bury ourselves in distortion and effects and lose the basic feel of the guitar.

I think that I have to agree with Newc for once on the whole "male ego" thing in the music world. Heck how many guitarists does it take to screw in a light bulb!

One of the things bugs me about musicians in general is when I hear that this one suck and this one is better than that one etc. We close ourselves off to so much richness by not seeing it for what it truly is .. "ART" unless your either just starting or really bad ...it's all art and art is speculative.. there is no bad .. just different

White, Black,Male,Female, Metal or Blues .. the fact is simple. The notes you hear being played don't live in a labeled box, they are just notes that give us something that we are all here to enjoy ... music .. and that can never be put into a box ..it would stifle the beauty of it..
Don't worry - I'll smack her if it comes to that. You do not sell guitars to buy shoes. You skimp on food to buy shoes! ~Mrs Tekky 06-03-08~
