I totally forgot about Bonnie (It was 2 in the morning I'm surprised I remembered anyone I did)

Okey switching off guitar for a moment, the person who has most influenced me musically is Tori Amos (kind of weird maybe for a metal guy to say) there's a lot of passion in her playing, I would put her up with Jerry Lee Lewis any Randy Rhoads any day.

Em you said "why there aren't more women guitarists/notable women guitarists? eh... i think its relative. maybe there are more out there than you know of, maybe not. it's not like we can't play as well as dudes, again.. relative."

Well, I didn't really mean why aren't there any good female guitarist, there are a lot of them out there. I think what my question failed to get across was more of why hasn't record company's pushed more female guitarists like they have male guitarists? Is it the perception that girls can't rock? or is it that they don't think it would sell?

You can go on myspace and find probably hundreds if not thousands of female guitarists out there that put most of the guys out there to shame. I'm using 80's shred and metal that is what I grew up with and there was a great defecite between what was being shown on Mtv or played on radio and what I knew was out there.. I'm by no means discounting blues, rock, or any of that, not even joan jett who I actually love.

Mayday and Newc I agree, but I think I didn't get my point across-

in the 80's when shred or whatever was big - how many female bands did you see getting pushed? It was not for there being a lack of female bands that could play and were playing that kind of music. Leather Angel being one that was signed and really good, Girlschool who was fucking awesome and did get some video air play, but not much, Precious metal who had to outstanding female guitarists - all were great, all could hang with the boys no problem. So why were more of these bands not push to the public? The question wasn't really about "art" at all - what I want to know is why were so many really good female guitarist discounted or overlooked when they played what was very popular and did it as well if not better then the boys?
In the future though I need to remember to not buy guitars while on Nyquil

I think it was all about record sales. If you search the RIAA database for 80s groups, you can see that many more millions of albums went Gold or Platinum for the guys then the girls. In other words there were more guys and gals buying guy shit than girl shit. As much as that sucks it's a possibility. Vixen 1 gold, Lita Ford 3 gold 1 platinum, Joan Jett 4 gold 3 platinum, Girlschool 0, Runaways 0, Phantom Blue 0, Then for example search the Scorps 8 gold, 7 platinum, 3 multi platinum. I think the record execs went where they thought the money was, and unfortunatley they passed on alot of great talent.

Because the simple-minded record industry boiled it down to the very basics: "chicks are there to be looked at, not listened to. Yes, she can sing and play, but let's show off those boobs and that body."

Look how quickly Heart got ignored when Ann blew up like a house. She could still sing, but she wasn't as "hot" as she was when she was thin.

Look at other bands that either had female singers or were all-female: their looks were made the focus, not their talent. The Bangles were a great rock band, but it was all about showing Suzanna Hoffs deep-throating the phallic microphone. No Doubt were great, but Gwen Stefani was the "babe", so they played her up. Even the Go-Gos were good, but it was all about Belinda Carlisle's "girl next door getting nailed by the garbageman" visage.

Let's not forget Lita Ford flipping the mic over for Kiss Me Deadly so it looks like a penis, and Femme Fatale singing 'Waiting For The Big One" where everytime the chorus rolls around she's doing some move that indicates she's waiting for King King's pecker in her face.

Add to that the fact that the industry was hung up on the idea that "girls=love songs".

Until you get the businessmen out of the industry and replace them with musicians, it's always going to be that way.

i am NOT here because i have boobs, or because i'm trying to prove anything. you either play, or you don't. how you look has nothing to do with it.
i don't know if this is quite what you meant, Bengal, but this is what i think.
and who cares if you're a girl and play guitar? what the fuck ever. give me a break.
i don't need acceptance from anybody, or any special treatment. i will play my guitars, i will make my music, and i won't ever stop and i don't care what anybody thinks.
no offense meant, but i am sick to death of anything "girlie" having to do with guitars. don't EVEN get me started on fucking Daisy Rock. what a load of shit that is that girls need "special" guitars. i play a fucking JACKSON.
i know i'm going off on a tangent here and i don't mean to offend, but the whole "go girls!" "girls are special!" "girls play guitars too!" shit really pisses me off. it's ridiculous. guitars are for everybody no matter who you are. you wanna play? play!
i am not just a chick with a guitar, i'm a GUITARIST, same as you. wanna talk gear? wanna talk guitars? LET'S GO.
I am sorry I jacked this thread with a stupid comment directed at jacksonplayer. It really wasn't the place but I'm glad you understand what I was trying to say in my long winded post...

              My thoughts for the day:

              1) I try never to agree with Bengal.

              2) I don't like Bonnie Raitt. Her playing is almost as bad as George Thorogood.

              3) Ann and Nancy Wilson kick ass.

              4) The chicks on the JCF are cool.

              5) Natasha Beingfield is way better than Jewel.

              6) 95% of all guitar players suck. There aren't many girl guitar players to begin with so the odds of running into a good one are slim.

              And there you have it!
I want REAL change. I want dead bodies littering the capitol.

I remember seeing an interview where Anne and Nancy were discussing the "What about love" video where they showed very little of Anne who was singing and they had Nancy come out as sort of the "Golden girl" in it.

What you said makes perfect sense and I agree. And I find it really sad that it's probably 110% the case.

I have to say I feel personally very fortunate that there's Myspace and other places now because there's a lot of talent (and a lot of crap, god knows I have a band page there too) out there that at the very least has an outlet to show their heart and soul and licks.

Phantom Blue, god that's a band i haven't heard of in a while.

I have never heard of Natasha Beingfield, I will look that one up.

Btw, has you seen Heart Live? I saw them for the "Heart" album and for their encore they did a bunch of Led Zeppelin covers, nancy is a very unappreciated guitarist. So is Anne for that matter though I haven't really heard her play too much since the 80's (at least not to where I knew it was her, and then only did because it was live)

As for Bonnie. .:ROTF: The reason she went to slide is she could not play a lick. Look it up. She went solo and, to her credit, she found a way to restart her career.

Wow, all this and all I ask for was the women stand up and say hi. I feel like Emm, I feel it and play it different from men, I can clearly hear it in my music.

Heather hangs out on Justin Wakleys myspace page now and then. When she was here, she had just been playing only a short while, less than a year. She's got tunes posted on Myspace, they don't sound that bad either. Rather formula, but what music that strives to appeal to a mass market really isn't as such?
