Is it the company endorsing the players skills, or the player endorsing the companys product?

yep, both.
Mainly..it's the player endorsing the company, but the company gives the endorsement for the player to do so. If that makes any sense. That's how I take in anyway. -

the artist endorses the product.
the company pays the artist for the endorsement, or offers some other inducement to the artist for the artist's endorsement.
