This doesn't surprise me at all. I think I read about Toshiba giving this up over the weekend. Judging by the ammount of movies on Blu-Ray vs. Hi Def showed me more thought Blu-Ray was the way to go. They can hold like an insane amount of info on a disc...
That was the point of my post. The reason a media fails or lives is 99% marketing. I always thought Bluray would win, just by the fact that Sony stuck a player in it's PS3.

I liked MD, it was a small portable recordable cd for all intents and purposes with a rugged cover.

For those who are really into this stuff know that Blu Ray wasn't ready when it was released, it was meant as a high capacity media storage, not a hi def movie format. It was rushed to market to compete with HDDVD. The stuff that is available on HD DVD such as interactive menus and TRUHD sound are things that bluray is barely starting to deal with, and the messed up part is that older players(meaning a year older) will not be able to handle the 1.3. disc that start coming out soon.

Another comparison would be DAT vs. DCC. The former was far more popular, but the latter had a better dynamic range.

It was smart in a way to put a player in the PS3. But in a way, XBox did it better. Not making it a manditory part of the unit, but an upgrade you could pay for if you want. I'm sure Microsoft pumped out more units because of the cost. Same thing with Wii. The thing that kills the Wii for me is no Hi Def. No Hi Def, No Way is my new moto. But adding the cost of the player to the initial cost of the PS3 sent more customers to the XBox. I have a PS3. I can't stand the controler for the XBox. But I would have went with Sony either way. I feel that what they have done with the PS unit since it first came out has been second to none. I'm still not convinced that if Microsoft took a few bad quarters, they wouldn't kill the XBox to save money...

And can't you play online for free with the PS3 where it costs money with the 360? That's not important to me either but I'm sure thats another factor into which unit someone will buy...

Beta failed not because of marketing but because of porn. VHS was dirt cheap - like 5 cents a tape to manufacture, 10 cents to duplicate a movie. Porn sided with VHS because Beta cost $1 to manufacture and $3 to duplicate.

As porn-in-the-home grew in popularity, and home video cameras that used VHS were cheaper than Betacams, Beta was bled dry and left for dead.

It was announced a few months ago that the porn industry has sided with HD-DVD because it's cheaper, but they'll probably go with internet delivery if Blue Ray wins.

As for Blue Ray itself, it should never have been targeted for movies. The whole purpose of the blue laser is that it's a finer beam than the traditional red laser, which means more data on a disc. Movies will not be 4 hour epics (sadly), and video games will not be twice as big, so the only benefit this has is for everyday data storage.

Unfortunately, the MPAA and RIAA said that people would be using blue ray recorders to dump VHS and standard DVD movies onto b.r. discs and selling them, so it's going to be used for movies rather than fall into the evil hands of the consumer.

It's just as well. Flash drives are skyrocketing in capacity - up to 8GB on a stick. Not to mention portable external hard drives are getting dirt cheap - 500GB for $150.

And blue ray is what, 1.3GB? Laughable.

TVs are talking to computers like they're in the family - stick a camera card or disc into your new TV and watch those home movies or do a slideshow of pictures of the vacation. Broadcast your edited home movies from your PC to your TV over your home network.

The N64, PS, and PS2 did good enough, so the Wii doesn't have to compete on the HD front.

I wouldn't count on the PS-Net being free forever. Those servers cost money, and as more people start bogging them down, you're going to see membership costs implemented, and they'll be steep. It's the Crack Dealer game; give it away for free to get them hooked, then charge them. Once the online kingdoms are established (i.e. Ultima Online) and people are knee-deep in leaderboard wars, you can look for Sony to lay down the contracts. People will pay.

                  Newc,
We've had this debate before. Beta failing had nothing to do with porn. It had to do with Sony. As I stated when we did this before, Sony wouldn't share the technology. JVC, who invented VHS, shared the technology and allowed every company to make a VHS player. Sony did not. If you wanted Beta, you had 1 choice, Sony. If you wanted VHS you had many choices, Panasonic, JVC, Toshiba, ect. More companies making the players means more VHS players in stores. More visable players means the consumer sees more, they are priced cheaper for competition puropses and it's a done deal. VHS got cheaper quicker than Beta. Even though Beta was a better format. Hell, there is still a station here in Des Moines who shoots on Beta. Not mine but there is one...

Porn has been available on every format since the dawn of time. I remember finding a 16mm porn film in my buddies parents dresser. How many people had 16mm projectors at home in the late 70's? Not many. So no matter what the format is, there is porn for it. It doesn't push the technology, it adapts to the technology...

I don't doubt Sony starts charging soon. I have no desire to play videogames with an 8 year old in Scotland so I don't care if they charge or not. But I agree, they will sooner or later...

                            Good one there fett!

Porn will never turn its back on ANY form of disemination. It would be stupid to. Too many "companies" to get on the same page for the whole industry to go Beta or VHS or whatever...

Would be like saying "The Movie Industry" backs Hi-Def DVD. Well, not really true. Some movie companies do but to say the industry as a whole backs one format is not true. Same thing in Porn. Too many movie companies to get all on the same page...

And who the hell buys porno tapes anymore anyway? Or DVD's for that matter?

I'd bet the internet is the biggest seller of porn nowdays. More discrete that way... Or so I've heard... I don't really know or anything about that or anything...

Sure it is. But, why go there? I want all the old VHS "Great Porn" movies. That way those pricks, I made a pun, can't steal my identity.
