  • Set List Advice

I'm trying to put together a set list for a new band. After the U.S. hard rock scene died, I went almost exclusively to European and underground albums for new music. I simply don't know what's popular here, so I'm begging for recommendations.

    Here are my criteria:
    - new(ish)...say within the last ten years
    - was/is commercially successful in the U.S.
    - sung vocals (no screaming, shouting, grunting, etc.)
    - lead vocals can be male or female
    - guitar is dominant in the arrangement
    - has some appeal to an aging 80s rocker (optional)

    Sweet Child o' Mine
    Tush
    Wishing Well
    Song 2
    Teenage Dirtbag
    Run to the Hills
    Enter Sandman
That one by Radiohead that Beavis & Butthead love

Oh, also one with swearing in it, to make you look hard. - She Hates Me, maybe?

    Encore:
    Smells Like Teen Spirit
    Smoke on the Water
    Dicks of Death

    Trust me, solid gold!!
So I woke up,rolled over and who was lying next to me? Only Bonnie Langford!

    I nearly broke her back

Here's a thread where someone asked about good 80's song suggestions. Look thru the whole thread, there's some good ideas there:

You can throw out your "newish" criteria

Iron Maiden, Iron Maiden, Iron Maiden...

The newish thing is the toughest part... hmmm... maybe something by the Foo Fighters? Velvet Revolver? Depending on how strong your vocalist is, something by AIC or Soundgarden might work (more than 10 years old, but still popular here).

Only things after 1998? Umm...Korn, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Slipknot, Nickelback, Puddle of Mudd, Mudvayne, Soil...nothing for 80s rockers in there, just a whole lot of crap.

              Ach du lieber...

Definately don't need 70s/80s rock suggestions. I've been living and breathing that stuff since puberty.

So basically you're tellin' me that it's not possible? Aren't there a handful of catchy "normal" tunes to be had in the last decade or so?

A few that I've come up with:

Evanescence - Bring Me to Life
The Darkness - A Thing Called Love (de-ghey-ified, of course)
like dg said, Velvet Revolver - Slither

                Stone Sour.

Call me a homer but I think they meet all your criteria.

Nickleback would too but I find them so bland, I can't even taste them.

Foo Fighters is a good suggestion.

Hey hey!!! That was my thread!

If you are looking for newer stuff... Korn, Chevelle, Three Days Grace, Breaking Benjamin, Godsmack, Seether... They all have some catchy tunes...

Play some Tool songs too... Sober and Stinkfist get the attention from the crowd.

+1 to Stone Sour. One of the few radio bands that I like these days. Funny you mentioned The Darkness. I thought of them & said "Nah, too ghey."

Stone Sours "hits" from the first album are Bother, Get Inside, and Inhale.

The "hits" from Come What(ever) May are Through Glass, Made Of Scars, 30-30-150, Silly World and Zzyxx Road.

I'm not sure what to tell you about Nickleback except do a Wiki search. I'm not a huge fan of them, but they do move a shit ton of units.

                        Foo Fighters? All of them.
