That guy's pretty good, his picking arm is fun to watch.

              • Bill, I was just wondering what you think about Lee Jackson amps? I have a GP-1000 preamp which is like a modded 80s Marshall or something and it totally slays everything when I run it through the power amp section of my 5150 . Not very gainy, but has enough gain for the 80s metal tone.
I am now looking for a matching SP1000 power amp by Lee Jackson, which I've heard is one of the best SS power amps out there...everybody's praising them!

                • I was never too impressed with that preamp. But for its time, it was cool. Never had enough gain for me, as you mentioned. 800s never did either tho haha...

                  • Naz...The only Lee Jackson stuff I heard or owned was two brand new Ampeg Lee Jackson VL100s...these things...the tolex looks weird..prolly just the lighting

One had EL 34..one had 6550s. Side by side the 6550s slayed the EL34. Besides the EL 34 one caught on fire. Well, I certainly liked them at that time..enough for me to own two of them. I actually bought two full stacks w/ matching Ampeg cabinets w/ GT 75 celestions..John still has two of them. Nice cabs!

You know, they did have plenty of gain on tap..and I never did utalized the attenuator that you see on the far left on the amp. The 5 way mid sweep way very cool. The lead tones were very nice..The rythm tone was good. Not great. I'd like to play one now knowing and playing like I do. Lately I've been more happy with my Marshalls than the Uberschall. Much less gain..But the palm muting really comes thru with drums...and I really like the edge that makes everthing reponsive to anything I throw at it. Whenever I run both the Uberschall and Marshall at the same volume levels you feel the Uber but you hear nothing but Marshall...no matter how ya dial 'em. I discovered this by playing with my kid who's becoming quite the player. After playing nothing but the Uber for a couple of months with my kid on drums. I switched to the Marshall and we had a blast with it. We were both surprised how "heavy" it actually does sound. Just by playing it a certain way..its all in the right context I guess. I have to fight with the Uber at times to nail things, but it sounds heavy as fuck. But I'm amazed how many great players use my Marshall rig. I always loved Jorns Lande's and Carnivora's Tore Moren's tone..its fucking awesome he's been using the JMP-1 since '96 as well. Everything you hear him do..is that rig. He's in alot of projects. Also many plays like Soilwork's Peter Wichers, Magnus Karlsson, and live Jorn Viggo Lofstad run a JMP-1 into the 5150 poweramp section (6L6)..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tc5Y-...eature=related

Well, The Ampeg Lee Jackson reminded me somewhere between a Marshall 2210 and a late 90's Laney..its in that ballpark. You can shred with them without the need for a stomp. I never tried or played with that particular preamp. Sure they sound 80's if you play 80's but alot of "heavier" players use 80's gear..I can play Van Halen with the Ubershall.. so it's all in context!

Sorry I can't be of more help.

                    Bill

                          • Well, I finally got the time to seriously check out some of those bands you recommended and I must say that I truly like Skyfire. "By God Forsaken" is amazing. I looked them up and you know they're a real death metal band because there appears to be approximately 5 umlauts in their names.

I haven't done any deep band searching lately. I've been listening to Spine of God, Dopes to Infinity, and Powertrip by Monster Magnet a lot since finding out about them, but they are more stoner rock than stoner metal. Stills ome catchy songs, and their singers voice is pretty cool.

                              • Hmm... Sounds interesting. I may have to look them up. I do listen to some non-metal (approximately 1% of my music). Let's just say Skyfire's "singer" (if you can call it that) probably isn't as good as Monster Magnet's.
