The first thing junior seamen (like baby sperm) would learn is the "ropes" of the ship, the lines that hoisted the sails, mooring lines, etc. When you say someone "knows the ropes" you're pretty much calling them a dumbshit with elementary knowledge. Lots of sailors know the ropes.
