  • 534 women and children

ELDORADO, Texas - Officials on Monday announced that 534 women and children — more than twice as many as had been earlier reported — were removed from a polygamist compound and that all 401 children have been placed in state custody because a judge deemed them in imminent danger of physical abuse.

Simply amazing. And to think, the women and children leaving the ranch have no freaking clue that there is a world other than what they've grown up in.

Bill, back in the 1980's and early 1990's, I surveyed gas pipelines all over Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas, Missouri, Louisiana, and Mississippi. I have seen some backwoods communities that would blow your mind. I always said that if I saw a fucker sitting on a porch playing a banjo, that was the day I was retiring!

I'm kind of torn on this issue. Sure, arrest the guy(s) breaking the law, underage marriages, but why take all of the women and children away? It's their religion; it's all they've ever known. The article claims that three generations were raised in this compound.

Isn't removing them encroaching on freedom of religion?

What is religion somehow immune to encroachment compared to the other freedoms recently altered? Most of the freedom we have extends until it starts to directly harm others or the public interest.

Give them a few years to reach legal age and then they can decide whether or not to make a new life with some other crackpot(s).

Anyone in New Jersey or NY? I know some of you are. Take a trip up to north New Jersey and find some Jackson Whites compounds- racist, inbred, luddite and in a time warp.

If you read deeper into the story you will find they didn't have freedom. Babies were tortured at birth to break them. The people there don't know what freedom is. They never were given a choice.

Maybe I've seen too much law and order, but I'm pretty sure that when a crime has been committed that the law supersedes some religious rights. You have the right to practice whatever religion you want, so long as you dont break the law. Adults having sex with minors is against the law, and one could even argue that because the adult women didnt do anything to stop it that they are also liable for any harm that came to any of the children. Of course, that's a stretch considering the circumstances, but anything is possible. Not to get off topic, but they arrest kinder gardeners these days for acting up in school, so it would not surprise me to hear of some jackass activist DA charging the victims in this case with crimes as well.

They were given the choice to go back if they wanted, and they declined....

freedom of religion doesn't trump safety of the individual.
