      Blaming OPEC = soooooo 80's

Blame over-consumption, and over-regulation. Blame the greenies. We can't build a refinery now thanks to enviro-nuts. We have a million different "required" fuel blends thanks to the same people. Don't get me started on ethanol...

It sucks, but we all have a part to play. Remember all this when it comes time to vote. Blaming Bush does NOTHING to fix it at this point. Find a new target. He's done now.

        Ahem.
        +1.
And stop blaming big oil for making a profit.
That's what a corporation exists for. And to provide a product or service.
The average oil corporate profit runs along the same lines as most other
        producers of commodities.

Do you guys really think if we had a refinery in Alaska gas would be $1.00 a gallon?

          Get real.

Both Exxon and Chevron had record setting years last year. Exxon made $4.6 million an hour last year. Show me another company making that kind of bank Cyg if they are all making about the same profit.

And you wonder why this guy gets on my nerves? "Stop blaming big oil for making a profit"? Do you guys get it now?

So put all of your money in Exxon/Mobile stock.
The hens are coming home to roost. The seed was planted many
years ago. Just the "psychological" effect on the market, if we came
up with VIABLE alternatives, and drilling our own reserves would have a major effect
on OPEC. Yes, we consume too much. Yes, Big Oil profits as a result.
By percentage (that's the only metric that counts), the oil companies are doing no better than most others in similar businesses.
I can only control my personal economy, so I cut my consumption a while ago.

              Edit:
If you want to get pissed, go after "Big Steel":
Nucor is the new breed of mostly non union steel mills, that use 98% recycled materials to produce their steel products. The chart is a comparison between Exxon/Mobile and Nucor.

They need to finish cleaning up their messes. Agreed, companies are in business to make profits, but how much is enough? Big oil is killing the consumer.
Seventeen years after the Exxon Valdez spill dumped millions of gallons of crude oil into the pristine waters of Prince William Sound, Alaska, Exxon Mobil has yet to pay $4.5 billion in punitive damages ordered by a court.
A federal court ordered Exxon Mobil Corp. to pay $4.5 billion to Alaskan fishing communities affected by the 1989 spill. But Exxon continues to fight the order, claiming the $3.5 billion paid in initial cleanup efforts and compensation is sufficient.
Alaskans say the devastation continues. Herring and salmon remain scarce, and people have lost their livelihoods. Fishing communities remain devastated.
"You'll find evidence of crude oil still seeping below the surface," says Betsy Goll, the Alaskan representative for the Sierra Club. "The fishery haven't fully recovered as well as some of the marine life in the area."
An Exxon representative told ABC News that the company can't afford to pay the settlement. This from the company that made $8.4 billion in profits last quarter.

                    Cyg,
Then show me a company that does $4.6 Million an hour. That should be easy right?

I think you've been hanging out with fett too much. Now you can see these things coming? The war in Iraq had nothing to do with any of this, right?

Speaking of that, didn't Bush say at the start of the war that Iraqi Oil would pay for the war and the rebuilding of Iraq? What happened to that?

Play the stock market? You must be joking. I'd rather put my money in my matress. I'm more of a real estate guy anyway.

It would take like 5 years for any drilling in Alaska to show an effect. You want an instant effect, have your boy Bush open the Oil Reserves. Instant relief.

EDIT: All I know is it's guys like you and I paying that $4.6 Million Dollar Profit an Hour. Not the Chinese or the Cubans or whatever. It's us. I don't know why that doesn't piss off more people.

We don't need another Valdez polluting the fine shores of the JCF.

                            Who said that?

Oil companies don't set the price - commodities traders do. Are you dim enough to think farmers set the price of corn?

                                Wow...

Ok - $4.6 million an hour. Is that pure profit? Do you think they have some operating costs? Hmmm... Gotta think they might. They also pay taxes. LOTS of taxes. Even with tax breaks.

Bush can't open the Alaskan reserves. Greenies again. But Alaska isn't the answer. Conservation is a good start though.

China and India pay the same for oil as we do. If you are so naive to think the US is the only country paying for oil, you need to start looking outside your own back yard.

I buy goods internationally each day - I've seen goods go up 15-20% in the last 3-4 months. The only reason things are rocketing upward is because of questionable fiscal policy. Oil is traded in US dollars. As the dollar is de-valued, do you think oil is going to get cheaper?

Obscene profits? Look at healthcare. And look at insurance companies.

                                Think about it a little.
