You know OPEC and Exxon Mobil may not be the bad guys in this. I think oil futures (and other commodity derivatives) are the new "credit default swap" in the financial markets, and the speculation is running up the price of oil. Of course the oil companies benefit by that anyways, but it's the financial institutions doing the speculating on the price of oil.

+1. Oil and some other commodities have been the only thing going up in value lately. People have been bailing out of securities and into commodities. When is the bubble going to burst already?!?

You got it.
The bubble bursts when someone kills the golden goose. The goose is the gas.
Already, folks that make sub 6 figure salaries are cutting out non-essential travel. And now they are getting double stuffed on food prices.
Eventually, when the host is dead, the parasite moves on.
That is, when gas profits start falling and people quit buying gas en masse, or enough players join the fuel speculation pyramid scheme, the folks that ran it up pull out their profits and leave the last fools onto the speculation holding the bag.
Happened with dot-com, energy speculation (enron), then real estate, the dollar, now gas. "safe commodities" are in demand for investors since there is uncertainty in other investments.

Ever since 2000 or 2001, oil prices have been steadily going up, and now we have them at their highest to date.
Remember Bush and Cheney are oil businessmen....and who is President??
It's a no-brainer...the 'fat cats' in Washington are using oil to line their pockets off the 'little guys' like you and me. Bush and Cheney have been getting as rich as they can off oil...before they make their grand exit out of the Whitehouse.
And we can't do much about it either...except 'take it' without lube.

I can hardly wait for the Bush admin to be over so the next president can quickly turn down the price knob back to $20 / barrel on the universal control-everything panel at the White House.
The one thing you got right was the 'no-brainer' part.

Hey, it's a tough job. It's not everyone that can moderate four people, including the discontent and those who are posting the same old crap that once clogged these forums. Congratulations on the promotion!
Back on subject, I payed $3.76 per gallon this morning. Even though I'm reimbursed at the rate of $.60 per mile, I'm still taking a beating. I heard on FOX News that it's a damn good possibility that gas will be $6.00 per gallon this time next year. ouch

That is quite true. I went there this morning, I swore I saw a tumbleweed blowing by.
But with Cygs help, that place will be huge in no time. Cough.
As for gas, it took $42.00 to fill my 12.5 gallon tank the other day. That sucks. I hate to see what it gets too from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
