  • I just don't get it

People pay to have their strings replaced!! WTF is up with that.

I also don't get why people can't change out their own pickups or adjust their own truss rod. I can see why people would be hesitant about other repairs.

Well, I set up and string my own shit. When I was young, I'd pay "pros" for set ups just to change it when I got home. That got old! I can set up any guitar or bass and make it play like butter..unless the neck is fucked. I'm a hack when it comes to repairs. I never learned to turn a screw. I replaced a pickguard once and thought that was brain surgery..so..yeah.

You don't want me playin' with a soldering iron..people get hurt that way.

I've been slowly transitioning to doing my own setups, and am going to learn how to do a full refret over the course of the next few weeks. I would only attempt something like that myself on a low-dollar guitar, though. Also, there are truss rod horror stories floating around that seem to scare some people.

For a string change, that is something you should only pay for once or twice IMO. Let a pro show you the first time and then do it yourself. Or even better, have your guitar teacher show you for free.

Pickup changes I can kind of see, as some jobs are fairly complex, but it's something that is learnable. Setups now... I think MORE people should pay for setups. Very few people learn to do it right or a number never bother to. And a lot of those that do setup their guitars often don't do it right, leading to more issues.

The only things I don't do myself are paint, refrets, and routing. Paint I don't have the patience to do it right, the others I just haven't needed done yet because I sell guitars before they need to be refretted!

Paying for stringing seems nutty, but I deal with people all the time who have zero mechanical ability, so I don't blame folks for leaving their soldering & setups to techs. There is plenty that can go waaaaay wrong on a guitar if the wrong set of hands gets on it.

I do everything myself Except for fret work. (ie replacing filing) I do fret dressings and polishing all the time. Paining guitars is fun. But i usually dont get it right for that like new glossy smooth shine. But im workin on it. It's fun. I enjoy and learned from the one of the areas best.

You can't pump your own gas here in New Jersey either.

Last time I was soldering, I soldered my finger. The iron rolled over due to a stiff cord. Fortunately, it hit my finger and not my new KV2--and I pass myself off as an electrical engineer
